The Carpenters Arms (Nicholson's (Mitchells & Butlers))
Visits Details
15 Mar 2025 (Hogan Sampling)
Busy for my late afternoon visit and now reunited with my advance party of three who had a table and had even saved me a seat. Not so busy not to get served almost immediately in this old-fashioned Nicholson's pub with six cask on. Located up an interesting cobbled street close to the castle, it has been voted several times as local pub of the year. The lower level of the pub is reputed to connect to an underground passage to the castle and so perhaps used by the royals as their local over the centuries! The old Ashby's Brewery's tiles remain on the flooring at the pub's entrance. The Ashby's Brewery was located north of The Thames and therefore historically in Middlesex and founded by Thomas Ashby in 1796. It was acquired by Simonds Ltd of Reading in 1930 with 333 houses, including those 138 taken over by Ashbys from Wheeler's Wycombe Breweries Ltd. Brewing ceased in 1931 and as detailed by the Brewing History Society.
Stroud - Tom Long Amber Bitter | 3.80 | | Good head and lacing and holding it well on this Stroud-based organic amber bitter south of Gloucester. A bitter first hit with a malty sweetness in this ruby brown coloured beer. A long-lastingly dry bitterness came to the fore with a malty and spicy mouthfeel. A moreishly dry aftertaste with a sweetness from its caramel flavourings. |

The first Saturday we'd had off for weeks. Near the Castle, but not today too touristy. The pub filled up with functionaries from the Castle and rugby players. Perhaps when they become past the game, they become functionaries in pinstripe trousers.
Orkney (Sinclair) - Dark Island | 4.60 | | A wonderful dark christmas pudding of a beer, dried fruit with the tantalising sourness of a late autumn to come. |
