Excellent atmosphere in the Beer House. Tried lots of different versions of Coral black stout in different bars in Funchal, Madeira. Their local brew. In the Hole in One bar at 3.40 euros it tasted so much better than the lager version. At the commercial centre next to the casino I tried a 20cl bottle at 1.20, though they tried to charge me 1.50 and 4.80 for a burger advertised at 2.80. After 3 different bills we agreed the correct price. Bar man said ‘but I gave you extra ham and salad in your burger special.’ Like I had asked him! Bottle version was thirst quenching but slightly gassy. Finally had a pint at the Beer House at 3.40 euros and 5.3%. Tasted of liquorice and porter. The brewer told me it wasn’t real but that they had brewed their own version before but not currently. Such a pity to miss it. In the small town of Santa Cruz where there were few tourists, they were proud of their stout and told me not to drink the Portuguese super bock stout but their own Madeira Coral Tonika stout. I did. It’s the holiday of Corpus Christi here today but the bars were still empty not long after 11.

Excellent atmosphere. Webcam situated just outside so I was being watched from my home computer. Madiera' only brewpub. They also brew a 5.3% porter/stout but I was told it wasnt real. Will go back tomorrow to try it. The brewery is the Beer House brewery NOT 1648.
BeerABVScoreNotes
1648 - Beer House4.50ExcellentA golden slightly cloudy rye beer.At 3.40 euros not the cheapest around but the only real ale in Madeira! This golden rye was not too dissimilar from German Weiss beers I have tried, a little less cloudy and less of the citrus zing that you get with a number of them. There was still a hint of nuttiness there; contributing to its well rounded flavour. They claim that they brew their beer adhering to the Bavarian purity law.

The Beerhouse - home-brewed beer and a fun atmosphere on the harbour in Funchal. The Beerhouse has to be the most visible place in Funchal - just walk to the seafront and look for the tented marquee-style place on a pier amid all the yachts and cruise ships. Its location in pole position on the harbourfront might set the ‘tourist trap' alarm bells ringing, but this brewpub is well worth a visit. For starters, it brews its own beers: there's usually a light, slightly cloudy German-style wheat beer, and in winter a dark, malty brew too. Located in Pontao de Sao Lazaro, Funchal.

We have visited this pub twice, seen 1 beer and tried it.
