Visits Details

14 May 2015 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening. The Pearl Izumi Tour Series Cycle Race had just ended and the Esplanade was clearing up and was crossable again. Plastic glasses in use - beer is disgusting out of plastic.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hook Norton - Old Hooky4.60AcceptableA half downed in one and outta this place, as served in plastic

06 Apr 2014 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening. Pub ticked all the boxes (Island LocAle, a gravity cask on counter, CAMRA discount) bar just one - actually getting served. Arrived 2054, barman appeared at 2058 and said he was closing at 9 and could not serve me as the chairs to one side had already been placed on tables. What hogswash and the height of commercial inflexibility.

Return visit 2120 hours. Doors locked but opened for me - quite a crowd in probably from a local hotel wanting a proper pub and not a hotel bar. Barman had considered closing up just before they and I arrived.

The pub is found in Ryde, Isle of Wight, PO33 2DY.

A real old seaside sea front tourist venue in Esplanade, virtually opposite the pier and railway station. One can only imagine the thousands of seaside revellers who have been in here in its various past guises. Fully carpeted and not too large. One long bar on the left. The licensees at July 2012 were keen on their real ale and always some Island brews on sale as they should be. Real ale sold through the 5 handpumps and the occasional counter top gravity cask. Often closes early if it judges business to be light.

We have visited this pub 6 times, seen 8 different beers and tried 5 of them.
