The Market House was established by 1871 and was a Watney’s Brewery pub, known as the roughest of the Broadway Market pubs. In around 1990 it was sold to Belhaven and soon followed the familiar route to closure taken by the majority of London pubs acquired by Belhaven; closing in this case in 1999. There were a number of redevelopment plans for the property, some of which acquired notoriety, but the pub nevertheless remained resolutely empty and near derelict for much of the next 13 years, despite the huge revival in popularity of Broadway Market. Finally re-opened in June 2012, after what was perhaps a world record period for a pub to be boarded-up. Now a single room pub with an open-plan kitchen and pavement tables.
