Early evening just as the sun was setting over The Dengie, warm cosy comfy and welcoming interior, we sat in the rear bar.

A beautiful early spring day on the lovely Essex coast, but surprisingly few day trippers around to enjoy it. Just a scattering of customers here in the late afternoon and I found myself briefly drawn into a discussion of winter boat repairs – to which I could contribute nothing at all.

A pleasantly nostalgic air on a September Tuesday lunchtime, the bar busy with diners and drinkers enjoying local ale and fish. My father in law last came here in the early 1950s.

Crouch Vale - Brewers Gold4.00ExcellentThe groaning handpumps foretold stale beer, but not a bit of it!Very pale gold, nettley hops, long bitter finish after East Anglian malt. Grand stuff.
