Fourth and final pub on a tour of Essex pubs, and without doubt the best beer of the day. I nearly fell on to a table of beer when I forgot that there was a step from the back bar to the larger one at the front. Somebody suggested there should be hazard tape there but I think I should have just looked where I was going. My only complaint about this pub is that there are a good number of external doors but only one of them is unlocked, presumably everybody enters via the car park these days.

Lunchtime visit and I had forgotten what a lovely pub this is – wish it was nearer to home. Roast partridge and mash certainly filled a hole and helped build me up for a stressful evening of football to come in Southend.

An attractive, weather-boarded, eighteenth century, village pub. Revived in 1990 and remaining under the same management into 2013. There are three separate bars (and one of them is sub-divided), each with its own real fire. Good, home-cooked meals are served. Tends to fly the flag of Flanders outside. This pub was CAMRA’s Maldon & Dengie Branch, Pub of the Year for 2013.
