2nd visit of the outing: For me, truly the most memorable pub of the day set in two downstairs bars. An old rustic charm about it afforded by this timber-framed building of mainly 16th century construction and in CAMRA'S Regional Directory of Pub Interiors of Special National Historic Interest. Some great looking fireplaces set in the two bars but sadly not lit on my visit. A warm welcome nevertheless and prompt service from the barman and quiet for my mid-afternoon arrival and well-timed to have missed the main influx earlier from the South Herts Branch of CAMRA doing their rounds of some 8 pubs of Hertford this afternoon.

Tring - Mansion Mild3.70ExcellentThis Tring-based ruby dark mild ale, brewed north-west of Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, was very welcome indeed as displaying a fine head and lacing which resolutely hung on to the end. A dry fruited first hit. Named after Tring Park House, originally built to a design of Sir Christopher Wren in 1685, a pleasant maltiness rising with the merest hint of chocolate and a moreishly dark fruited note bobbing up. A dark berry flavouring paddling out. Very moreish!

Early evening and fairly busy with folk inside and out on the pavement. Friendly welcome we chatted to the friendly locals in this proper back street boozer and enjoyed our final beer of today.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brewster's - Hophead3.60GoodA pale hoppy brew with a fresh floral hop character from a blend of English and American hops. A most satisfying and refreshing session beer.

My first visit here for many years, although I was quite a regular visitor at one time. Not much has changed. The guv’nor told us he had been here just six weeks and planned to revive the pub after an unsettled time in its history.

13:45 Planned lunch stop. Sadly no chef, so no food. Enjoyed a pint in what I consider to be the best pub room in Hertford. I noticed that the pub sign is bizarrely the Uffington white horse. What relevance that has to a Hertfordshire pub I do not know.
