Visits Details

14 Aug 2017 (Philip Pirrip)
Late evening visit. Did not know what to expect after my last real ale-less encounter here.
Crate - Session IPA3.60PoorA Blackadder Mrs McMurk beer if ever there was one. Pretty horrible tasting too but lemonade splashes cured that. Another customer took one sip of his and asked for lemonade too. Quite unsolicited another member of bar staff turned the clip round and started cleaning the lines. Looks like we were served the lees.

10.30pm and a pub with no beer! Well at least not a single handpumped real ale on offer. In response to "Busy day?" the barmaid responded "Mmmmmmmmm".

Late evening visit. Poor old beer range but a good little live band on its last couple of songs.
London Beer Factory - Beyond the Pale4.20ExcellentExcellent condition but needs a warning "unadulterated lemon juice". A bore and a chore to drink

Just a very brief visit here as I managed to arrive a couple of minutes after the friend I was trying to meet had left. Not all the rooms were open and only a couple of tables were not laid for dining in the early evening.
Hop Stuff - Fusilier4.30AcceptableGolden/amber beer. This pint not in very good condition, with only just about acceptable flavour.

Evening until close. First visit here. The new kitchen (which is in open view) looks exceedingly well appointed and the chef, with whom I spoke, is a real enthusiast, but it was the beer I was here for.
Hop Stuff - Fusilier4.30Good

About the Eltham GPO

The pub sign. Eltham GPO, Eltham, Greater London

Summary of Beer Scores

The pub is found in Eltham, Greater London, SE9 5DQ.

Long before it was a pub it was the local Royal Mail sorting office for the area in Passey Place. Then it became a pub called The Old Post Office (in fact this name still appears on all external signage!!) then re-launched, with change of name, by Antic in February 2014 majoring on real ales in Antic's usual shabby chic d├ęcor style. Walls adorned with (and some free standing too) bric-a-brac including dolls' houses, postal items, sewing machines and typewriters. Soon after opening an openly visible and well equipped kitchen was added and now some adventurous menu items are available. One area is set out for restaurant service. Expected to bring some serious real ale interest to Eltham. Outside drinking in the fully fenced side alleyway. 8 handpumps of which 5 face the entrance and 3 are to left hand side. Portobello took over from Antic here in 2020. Closed July to October-ish 2023 for refurbishment.

We have visited this pub 8 times, seen 23 different beers and tried 5 of them.
