My ever first visit late in the evening. A rather depressing approach along Anchor and Hope Lane then turned left and found an oasis of brightness and warmth. Apparently a mecca for away fans at Charlton Athletic FC matches.

Greene King - Hardys & Hansons Bitter (was Kimberley Bitter)3.90GoodA tasty floral bittered brew, slightly cool. I bit my lip on the lack of honest provenance on the pumpclip

Lunchtime stop, with sunshine between hailstones tempting many of the local gentry out on to the riverside terrace.

Sharp's - Doom Bar4.00AcceptableNot my favourite beer, but Hobson’s choice today as the London Pride has expired. Mostly a caramel flavour.

The pub is found in Charlton, Greater London, SE7 7SS.

The Anchor & Hope is Charlton’s only surviving riverside pub, a former Charrington's house, and is usually described as having been present here on the Thames bank since the 16th century. It was re-built in its present form in 1899 and is a striking building, dominated by a turret and cupola. It was, however, substantially rebuilt after World War II, following damage when the glass works behind the pub was hit by a V1 Flying Bomb. At one time the landlady (a Mrs Sergeant) would apparently only serve those customers she liked the look of; these days there is a welcome to all. There are two bars, the smaller of which is sometimes reserved for dining and has a splendid collection of photos of working boats of the Thames. Outside is a riverside patio drinking area with extensive views. 2 handpumps.

We have visited this pub twice, seen 2 different beers and tried both.
