| Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Venture | 3.70 | ![]() | Presented with a very good head and lasting lacing on this amber ale from Nethergate Brewery set up in 1986 on Nethergate Street in Clare, Suffolk, before moving to Pentlow in North Essex, and then back to Suffolk. Their copper-amber coloured Venture session ale was specifically created in 2017 to mark the firing up of their brewing facility in Long Melford. A very hoppy first hit from its new-world blend of American hops featuring Nugget behind a herbal and woody bitterness with a faint hint of sweet ginger and resinous pine, Cascade lending grapefruit and sweet citrus and Ekuanot aiding tropical notes of papaya, melon and lime zest, and a subtle hint of green pepper. A fruity hoppiness rising from its citrus and soft tropical fruit flavours. A gentle malty note joining in from its English malts, including barley and wheat, lending a bready, pale malt sweetness and a hint of caramel and biscuit for me. A dry hoppy bitterness winning over with a crisp grapefruit and lime flavouring mixed with a touch of spice. Served in excellent nick. |

The pub is found in Sudbury, Suffolk, CO10 1HJ.
Intriguing building in Church Walk, Acton Square. The former Phoenix brewery was adjacent and the pub appears to have incorporated parts. The pub is an L-shape around a courtyard which has entrances from two separate streets. This may have been the original brewery yard. The bar is located in the short part of the L along with two snugs. The main part of the pub occupies the long part of the L. This is a long single storey building that may have been the brewery stables or dray sheds. The interior is painted "gastro grey" and the food trade is obviously important. Twoe regular beer and one ever changing guest. Refurbished in March 2019 and although retains real ales it now has a greater emphasis on food.
We have visited this pub twice, seen 6 different beers and tried 2 of them.
