Third visit of the outing: Positioned slightly outside the centre of Sudbury, this back street inn in Church Walk could not be entered at first. A sign directed me to Acton Square where you entered from its rear courtyard. Very food orientated in layout but the main bar area had seating set outside for drinkers. Ticking over with a good few in on my early afternoon arrival, I was met with friendly, attentive service. The pub sits partially on the site of the former Phoenix Brewery where the Phoenix Court flats are now situated, and so-named because the brewery arose from the ashes of a fire in 1890. The brewery operated adjacent to the Waggon & Horses, renamed The Wagon in 2019. When brewing ceased, this afforded The Wagon pub an L-shaped building arranged around a central courtyard that likely served as the original brewery yard. The long, single-storey section of the pub is believed to have originally functioned as the brewery's stables or dray sheds and this where I supped my chosen beer. While the main site is now residential, the original brewery office on the extreme right of the yard survived the transition. Additionally, a plaque commemorating the 1890 fire remains on the wall to mark the location. The newly-built 1893 brewery was active through the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, into the 1910s and 1920s. Following its closure as a brewery, the site was repurposed. By the post-WWII era, the former brewery buildings were being utilised as an egg packing station. The industrial buildings remained vacant on Church Walk for decades until 2014, when they were demolished and the Phoenix Court residential flats were built.
