8th stop of the outing: My final stop before the train back to Greenwich to hit the buffers at the River Ale House. As much as anything it served as a fuelling stop to fill that hungry tummy and aid soaking up an afternoon of real ale on this railway-themed itinerary. Ticking over mid-evening in this surprisingly tiny Wetherspoon's for one of the City of London's mainline stations. Friendly, speedy service for a curry and a guest ale to wash it down with.

Twickenham (also uses sub-brand Old Hands) - Red Sky4.10AcceptableFresh on by all accounts as not apparent on my earlier visit shortly after mid-day. Some head and lacing but soon legging it out of the glass. Did have a taster first but lacking conditioning as no doubt too soon on. No other guest on to try also meant I stuck with it. A dry fruited first hit on this Twickenham-based amber red ale. A gentle hoppiness rising from its Southern Hemisphere hops, lending it floral and citrus notes. A maltiness gathering pace with hints of caramel-infused biscuit, alongside nutty and lightly roasted notes crossing the points before shunting out. It sufficed in washing the curry down and so served its purpose here and before I hit the final buffers in East Greenwich.

1st visit of the outing: Ticking over for my first stop of the day and first ever venture into this rather tiny Wetherspoon's drinking hole and for a main terminus station, Cannon Street, in the City of London. This first stop was all part of a London drinking society's social which I am not a member of. I knew of it through someone I know sharing the itinerary of the day's outing and following the theme of London's mainline stations' termini. A few Charlton FC supporters in, sporting their Charlton shirts and ahead of the home game, made me feel almost at home back at the River Ale House micropub in East Greenwich. I got in shortly after mid-day just before an orderly queue started to form as just one serving. An all-day brunch was ordered to suitably wash down the only guest ale on. This quickly ran out with the society's day-trippers opting for this as well before it was all supped!

Windsor & Eton - Guardsman4.20GoodGood head and lacing and lasting on this copper-coloured session bitter brewed in Eton itself and the first beer brewed in the town for over 80 years when it was launched on St. George's Day in 2010. A dry bitter first hit. A malty bitterness rising aided by its Maris Otter pale malt and crystal malts. A hoppiness winning over from its English hops: Pilgrim, Styrian Golding and Fuggles. A moreishly hoppy bitterness shunting out for me and served in a condition that was perfectly palatable to my taste buds. The beer's name is a proud nod to the iconic bearskin hats and red tunics of the Guard regiments based in Windsor.

Mid evening, just passing through off a train when a CAMRA acquaintance earholed me for a pint or two. Range apparently restricted, leaving only some dark ones, as running down stocks for a week or so of closure next week.

My first visit here, a very pleasant Spoons. I am not a fan of Christmas beers so I was disappointed to find so many of them still on sale in the middle of January.

Mid-evening and quiet (in terms of customer numbers) in here. I bumped into Gene K and we compared notes on recent pub visits.

Butcombe - Rare Breed (or Adam Henson's Rare Breed)3.80AcceptableAn odd taste. Turned out to be near the end of the barrel, although perfectly drinkable. Just odd.

Jammed at 8pm on a Monday evening – space is always going to be at a premium here I suspect. Possibly worth noting that there is not enough room for this pub to have any toilets of its own.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mauldons - Bronze Adder4.10GoodReddish/amber-coloured. A straightforward, but above-average, fruity Bitter.
Lancaster - Albion Connection4.50GoodHmmmm! This beer is described as a fruity, bronze-coloured Bitter. The drink I was served was a decent, if perhaps slightly lightweight, Stout (which I rated as ‘good’).
Marston's - Barley Brown's ESA5.10AcceptableGolden and soft. Hints of nice flavours but nothing is pronounced enough.
