Crowded in the main back bar with the Spurs game on TV, so I sat in the little Public Bar at the front which was almost empty. It had a 1980s feel, complete with ripped upholstery.

A bus from Old Street to Waterloo Station dropped me in Mepham Street outside this pub so I decided to pop in and use the facilities rather than pay on the station. I had not been in here for a good number of years and not much has changed except for the fact that the bar staff used to normally have Irish accents, now they have Eastern European ones. Good friendly and efficient service.

Late evening visit. Always evokes those memories of Ruddles, Arkell's and other stalwarts of the early real ale revolution. At 2300 the call rang out "10 minutes to drink up guys" - quite unnecessary.

Early lunchtime and only three people in the back bar. Changed little since last in about 30 years ago.

Bustling on a Saturday evening with Premier League football being shown on plasma TVs. All tables taken with many punters eating. Staff attentive and service quick and polite.

Purity - Pure Gold3.80GoodSmooth and balanced golden ale in top notch form and very moreish. Slight criticism in that it was perhaps served a couple of degrees above ideal temperature.
