Visits Details

24 Apr 2025 (Hogan Sampling)
First visit to this fine old village pub early afternoon due to another at nearby Halstead still closed from late November 2024. A very reasonably priced food menu compared to others seen and a good selection of food also brought our party of two here. Almost not in the 21st century, never mind it having been in much of the 20th century, as minus any tv screens, a jukebox, fruit machines and any piped music. A log fire was gently smoking in the bar area and a small dining area appeared to be quite full. I was afforded a large round table overlooking the bar area and sufficiently away from the log fire. No one at the bar where you place your food and drinks order when I got here and just in time before a group of about six arrived shortly after. Two old boys running the bar and bringing the food plates out and only waited some 30 minutes for a delicious steak and ale pie complete with mash, broccoli, carrots and parsnips and a good measure of gravy in its own jug. Only fleetingly saw one other staff member appear and no doubt running the kitchen single-handedly. The Cock Inn house beer is said to be Ruddles Best Bitter according to the local CAMRA details alongside the other regular on, Green King IPA, also from Bury St Edmunds. Two other ales which frequently appear are said to be Abbot Ale and Old Speckled Hen. Very much enjoyed my visit and shall return. Popular no doubt with walkers and cyclists alike to keep it alive alongside hardened regulars in for the good banter the spacious bar area affords. Some were just starting to assemble while I was then tucking in.

Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%)3.40GoodArrived with good head and lacing and lasted throughout on this Bury St Edmunds IPA from Suffolk. The first hit was a mildly fruity hoppiness. A hoppy taste lingering in the mouthfeel from its totally English hop concoction of Pilgrim, Challenger and First Gold. Very moreish and complemented well the hallmarks of a home-made steak and ale pie.

Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%)3.40Not TriedThis is according to local CAMRA's details and badged as "The Cock House Ale".

Busy on a suddenly damp Sunday early afternoon.Food would entail a three quarters of an hour's wait, so we stood out front with our dogs and drinks. There was also a Cock Inn house beer.
