Visits Details

29 Nov 2025 (Hogan Sampling)
6th visit of the outing: A quaint looking 15th century river house called Lombard House on the River Lea and said to be one of the oldest buildings in Hertford. Although it has been a private members' club since 1897, CAMRA members are permitted and South Hertfordshire CAMRA Club of the Year winner. Hosts folk, jazz and rock music two nights a week but not during this Saturday late afternoon visit. Busy at the bar with a number no doubt from the South Herts Branch of CAMRA assembled there alongside some from north London CAMRA too. Our party of four from SE London were duly seated away from the main standing areas next to the sizeable bar. A good selection of 4 real ales on and all had to be tried given that other venues were either too packed, noisy or lacking an especially appealing beer to sample. Attentive, friendly service at the bar for our late afternoon arrival.

New River - Chadwell4.20Excellent1st beer of this visit: This Hoddesdon-based chestnut-coloured session bitter from the banks of the New River in Hoddesdon, south-east of Hertford and named after the source in east Hertfordshire of the New River, came with very good head and lacing and lasting throughout. A dry bitter first hit. A mildly malty note rising. A dry hoppiness, care of its Fuggles hops, leaping up for a pat and a tail wagging on my taste buds in its downwards scampering. First brewed in August 2023 and following a British recipe based on New River's Happy & Glorious Coronation ale which went down very well by all accounts.
Vale - VPA4.20Good4th beer of the visit: Good head and lacing and lasting on this Buckinghamshire pale ale from just north of Brill and north-east of Oxford. A pleasantly hoppy first bite. A mildly fruited hoppiness rising aided by its Cascade and Challenger hops. A dry hoppy note sailing out.
Vale - Brill Gold (was 3.5%)3.40Good3rd beer of this visit: This Buckinghamshire golden ale from north of Brill and north-east of Oxford presented a good head and lacing and lasting. A dry fruity first hit. A pleasantly dry hoppiness winning over from its First Gold and Celeia Goldings, the latter affording it a herbal citrus note playing out.
Vale - Black Beauty Porter4.40Good2nd beer of this visit: Presenting very good head and lacing and lasting on this porter from just north of Brill and a Buckinghamshire-based brewery, north-east of Oxford, and going strong since 1995. A dry bitter first hit. A chocolatey fruitiness rising from its five dark malts. A gentle hoppiness from its Goldings and Northdown hops, bobbing up before its sail downwards.

June's NESW venue and already open before 12.00 so we gathered round our allocated tables and enjoyed an afternoon session in this comfortable, spacious friendly and welcoming social club. Food was excellent value at £10 from the Caribbean inspired menu.

In Bull Plain, dating from the 15th century with later additions, Lombard House, on the River Lea, was built as an English hall house and is one of the oldest buildings in Hertford. It has been the home of this private members' club since 1897. CAMRA members are welcome and may be signed in on production of a membership card. You will find two or three changing beers and real cider, which can be enjoyed in the delightful walled garden and riverside terrace. South Hertfordshire Club of the Year joint winner in 2021. There is a folk club every other Wednesday (open to all) and rock music every other Thursday. It's quiz night on the first Wednesday of each month. Look out for the Literary Festival held in July and occasional pop-up meal events.

We have visited this pub twice, seen 8 different beers and tried 7 of them.
