Visits Details

13 Dec 2025 (Hogan Sampling)
1st visit of the outing: First to arrive for an out-of-branch CAMRA outing to Sevenoaks, Chipstead and Dunton Green. Not been to Sevenoaks for many a decade and certainly not to sample its ales before. A warm welcome from the barmaid who unlocked the pub's front door at noon and gave me a sample of one of her two ales on, a Wychwood Hobgoblin, Bah Humbug. The pub was slightly bare in pictures and ornaments but retained a traditional bar and bar-back and the tables and chairs were suitably fitting for the age of the premises with a cottage-style frontage and what appeared to be a much more ancient rear to it.

Marston's - Wychwood Hobgoblin, Bah Humbug4.30GoodVery good head and lacing, and lasting all the way, on this brown and amber ale which came originally from Wychwood Brewery in Witney, north-west of Oxford. Wychwood is now owned by Carlsberg Britvic. Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company closed Wychwood Brewery in November 2023 and Wychwood's ales are now brewed at Marston's Brewery in Burton-upon-Trent. A spicy, fruited first bite. A gentle bitterness rising with a good sprinkling of cinnamon, in amongst the malted barley and hops, tantalising my taste buds. Its Maris Otter barley giving it a sweet-honeyed flavouring that you would expect in mince pies, Christmas pudding and Christmas cake. A dry bitterness still managing to pervade alongside its malty note or two sliding down my chimney.
