3rd stop of this Billingshurst outing: Another centrally located high street venue and not overly busy early afternoon with just a few diners in and not many drinkers in evidence. Friendly prompt service at the sizable bar counter and plenty of seating to be had at the front of the pub away from the dining areas in the pub’s sprawling rear.

Badger (Hall & Woodhouse) - Fursty Ferret3.40GoodVery good head and lacing and sticking to the glass to the end on this Dorset-brewed Hall & Woodhouse malty amber ale from Blandford St Mary, just outside the town of Blandford Forum and within a 20-mile radius of Shaftesbury, Dorchester and Poole. A lightly fruited first hit. A dry hoppy bitterness leaping up with a biscuity taste. A tail-wag of a hoppy fruity note lingering from its hops, Celeia and Cascade, the latter an American hop known for imparting distinctive citrus, particularly grapefruit, and Centennial, another American hop and contributing to its lemony, floral smell and flavourings. Certainly, subtle floral and lemon touches on my palate before bounding downwards. It is so-named after a local legend about a real, mischievous ferret which used to sneak into an inn to drink the beer.

The pub is found in Billingshurst, West Sussex, RH14 9QS.

This 16th century coaching inn in the middle of Billingshurst High Street, of the three old fashioned pubs in the centre of Billingshurst, must surely win for its age and preserving all that centuries of age can delight us with. It is no less a Grade II listed building, timber-framed with rough cast infilling with a Horsham slab roof to top it all. Unlike neighbouring properties this old pub lies a good way back from the High Street with an attractive front garden making it even more a picture postcard. As a Hall & Woodhouse-owned and run pub, it has an emphasis on food with a restaurant that can seat up to 50 people and fill their tummies with traditional pub classics. This is to its rear and so the front section of the building is pleasingly very much a rustic pub in proportions and appearance. An enclosed rear garden lends itself to families. To keep itself focussed on the local Billingshurst community, it hosts live music and quiz nights. Hall & Woodhouse’s own range of Dorset-brewed Badger beers are always on. The chef also even makes the pub’s cakes we are told. On a visit at the end of January 2026, diners had the opportunity to tuck into roasted duck and there were two Badger cask ales on, Tangle Foot and Fursty Ferret. An open fire ready to be lit with logs already in place added to the pub’s appeal with pewter tankards hanging from one of the many beams and here above the fireplace.

We have visited this pub once, seen 2 different beers and tried 1 of them.
