Visits Details

14 Feb 2026 (Hogan Sampling)
2nd visit of Farnham and its environs: Ticking over with mainly families with children dining. Perhaps the real ale drinkers mainly come outside of the food serving times! There are though dedicated dining areas away from the drinking areas around the bar and not too far away from it. Mid-afternoon for our visit, myself and one other real ale enthusiast, with all-day dining at weekends and on Fridays. Prompt friendly service and pleased to discover a new brewery for me, Bond Brews from Berkshire, and their copper-coloured session bitter being served.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Bond Brews - Best of British4.00Excellent1st beer of this visit: This Berkshire copper-coloured session bitter some 11 miles north of Farnham "as the crow flies" was presented with a very good head and with its lacing lasting the whole way. Just south of Wokingham by 2.5 miles, it has come from a traditional microbrewery, established in 2015 by Dean Bond, hence the name, specialising in handcrafted real ales using a six-barrel plant. A malted bitter first hit. A hoppy bitterness climbing from its two whole leaf hop varieties for a good bitter-sweet presence, and although not defined, likely to be a combination from the classic British hops range and possibly including Fuggles or Challenger that are consistent with a traditional English bitter. Gentle nutty and biscuity notes joining in with hints of dried fruit and just slightly caramel-tasting. A moreishly dry malty bitterness aided by three blends of malted barley and wheat descending in its finale with lingering hints of chocolate. Very quaffable as in superb condition and moreishly full in flavour but a different ale also had to be sampled from the five on.
Triple fff - Moondance4.20Good2nd beer of this visit: Presented with very good head and lacing and lasting well on this brewery's original and most decorated recipes and first brewed in 1997, the year of the brewery* being set up and based at Four Marks, some 14 miles south-west of Farnham. A fruited first hit. A gentle hoppiness rising on my palate delighting it with sweet, bready malt with subtle hints of caramel emanating from its Maris Otter and Cara Gold malts. A full floral hop flavour of light apple bitterness pervading from its American Cascade hops, exuding the merest hints of citrus, passionfruit, mango and orange. A good lively citrusy fruitiness entertaining before paddling out. Slightly over-fruited for me but in perfectly good nick. *Triple fff Brewery is an independent, award-winning brewery founded in 1997 by Graham Trott in Four Marks, Alton, Hampshire. The name "Triple fff" is a musical reference to fortississimo, meaning "very, very loud," reflecting the brewery's theme of naming most of its beers after iconic rock songs or albums. This ale is named after the iconic 1970 song and album "Moondance" by Van Morrison, a legendary Northern Irish singer-songwriter most famous for his unique musical style, often called "Celtic Soul", which blends R&B, soul, jazz, folk, and blues. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential and prolific artists in modern music history.

The pub is found in Boundstone, Surrey, GU10 4SA.

This 150-year-old free house has very much a rural feel about. Independently owned at 15 Bat & Ball Lane, Boundstone, in the Bourne Valley, it is near Farnham’s south side and very close to the Surrey/Hampshire border. It grew out of one of two buildings in the valley dedicated to the growing of hops for the local breweries in Farnham and Alton. The 'Bat' was once a hop grower's tally office where pickers in the surrounding fields were paid in tokens and could redeem these against beer available on the premises and so a pub was born. Entering through its main entrance, there is a wood burning stove in winter and the walls are panelled and there are oak ceiling beams abounding. There are several different rooms inside, a covered patio with grape vines, a large terraced garden and a fenced children's play area popular with families. Largely devoted to diners, it impressively had 6 real ales on with three changing and was in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide and as witnessed on a visit in mid-February 2026. The pub has a good reputation for serving top quality locally sourced food, according to the local CAMRA branch, as well as hosting an annual beer festival in mid-June along with a weekly quiz and a monthly open mike night. If on foot, several footpaths lead to the pub which is also reached by a narrow unadopted road named Bat & Ball Lane which leads to a large car park. The owners describe the pub as being “about warmth, conversation, and a proper sense of belonging.” They add: “Pubs are the beating heart of the community - places to laugh, share stories, and weather life’s ups and downs together.” Open every day and all afternoon into the late evening but this is not applicable to their food serving times and so do check. They are dog-friendly.

We have visited this pub once, seen 5 different beers and tried 2 of them.
