| Hogan Sampling | | 22 Mar 2026 | Second day on, and a long day being Sunday as open from 1pm, with good head and lacing and now lasting to the end on this Yorkshire English bitter. Still a very dry bitter first bite. Still the same gentle maltiness rearing up. A bready biscuit, fudgy caramel and toffee hint or two on my taste buds. Its Maris Otter barley alongside four other malts prevailing. A good dose of citrus, grapefruit and pineapple from its New World hop varieties with 3 or 4 types from the US and NZ lending it that fruited hoppiness. A malty bitterness lingering. Much more palatable than on the evening before. |
| Hogan Sampling | | 21 Mar 2026 | Fresh on and good head and lacing but not lasting on this English bitter brewed by Brew York, a craft brewery based in York*. A dry bitter first bite. A gentle maltiness rising with bready biscuit, fudgy caramel and toffee flavourings from its Maris Otter barley, a celebrated heritage malt that turned 50 years old in 2016, the same year Brew York was founded, and alongside four other malts. A fruited hoppiness winning over from its New World hop varieties with three or four types from the US and NZ lending it subtle layers of citrus, grapefruit and pineapple. A bitter maltiness sailing out. Perhaps a touch too fresh to be at its best but drinkable enough. *A real otter resides in the River Foss directly behind the brewery's city-centre beer garden; the brewery named him Maris. |

| Hogan Sampling | | 03 Jan 2026 | Only its second day on for this York-brewed amber bitter, but not tasting as good as when first supped when fresh on Friday evening. Head and lacing evident but not lasting. A bitter and fruity first hit. A malty caramel and toffee infusion rapidly rising but not to my taste bud's approval. It really just tasted too sweet. A fruity note still there with hints of grapefruit and lemon from its New World hops. A dry malty bitterness lingering. One sufficed and it was strange tasting so tired for me just a day on. |
| Hogan Sampling | | 02 Jan 2026 | Fresh on as replaced Canterbury's The Reeve's Ale when I requested my third pint. Superb head and lacing and lasting throughout on this York-brewed amber bitter. Very good head and lacing and lasting and so most definitely had gone through its second fermentation in the barrel. A dry malty first bite. A malty bitterness rising from its no less than 5 different malts with a hint of caramel and toffee but not overly noticeable. A fruity note or two tap dancing on my taste buds aided by its hints of pine, grapefruit and lemon flavourings from its background hoppiness prevailing from its New World hops. A pleasant malty bitterness paddling out with a slightly fruity kick to it from its mix of hops. |
| Hogan Sampling | | 29 Nov 2025 | This bitter, brewed in York's city centre near the River Foss, was fresh on today but perhaps not hugely supped as Charlton FC were away, losing 3-1 to Coventry. It came with a head but did not last. A sweetish bitter first hit with biscuit, caramel and toffee flavourings. A dry bitterness rising aided by four different varieties of new world hops. A toasted malty note rearing up from its five different malts but a dry bitterness winning over and sliding down. It lacked the conditioning it might well have presented on the Sunday and following going all the way through its second fermentation. |
| Hogan Sampling | | 08 Aug 2025 | I think this York-based bitter had woken up from its early delivery the evening before. It now presented some head and lacing but not lasting still. A malty first bite. A gentle bitterness rising with a caramel-infused biscuity note. A dry bitter maltiness living on. |
| Hogan Sampling | | 07 Aug 2025 | Head and lacing, poor, and unable to hold it. Unusual for Brew York to be like this as in rather flat. It was only its first night on. A very bitter first bite on this York-brewed bitter. A maltiness rising from its five different malts in on the mix. A dry hoppy bitterness lingering assisted by its three varieties of New World hops, referring to being primarily cultivated in the Americas, Australia, and New Zealand. One sufficed as have had this tasting much better and in better condition and so to others to try. |
| Philip Pirrip | | 07 Aug 2025 | 4th pint out of a cash fresh on. Simply poured flat and stayed flat. No off flavours but a real chore to finish |
| Hogan Sampling | | 02 May 2025 | Fresh on, and almost literally, was this Yorkshire-brewed bitter and presenting very good head and lacing and lasting throughout. A malty bitter first hit. A malty mouthfeel derived from its five different malts and a wonderfully hoppy bitterness from no less than three varieties of New World hops, the collective name for those from America, New Zealand and the southern hemisphere. A pleasantly malty hoppiness persisting in its moreish aftertaste. Only this was supped on this visit as quite simply it was the best! |

| Hogan Sampling | | 08 Apr 2025 | Second night on and holding its head and lacing like a trooper on this York-based brewery's bitter! A very malty first hit. A dry malty bitterness on the mouthfeel and holding. Even the head and lacing were holding! Only five different malts but it was a thoroughly malty explosion on the palate. There was the moreish bitter dryness lingering and just in case you asked! Another had to follow the first! |
| Philip Pirrip | | 08 Apr 2025 | Good enough |
| Philip Pirrip | Not Tried | 15 Dec 2024 | |
| Hogan Sampling | | 15 Dec 2024 | Began with head and lacing and only the first day on but soon lost it and so needed a good few decants to restore it. A very malty first hit and brought back having it a week or so earlier in here as well. The mouthfeel was of spice among all the malts in it with a bitterness lingering. |
| Hogan Sampling | | 10 Dec 2024 | Still holding its head and lacing on the 3rd night but minus the full flavouring in its carbonation. A certain degree of decanting was necessary to keep its head further down the glass. Still holding on to its maltiness and with a moreishly dry aftertaste. |
| Hogan Sampling | | 09 Dec 2024 | 2nd night on. Strangely not holding good head and lacing for a new beer on. It actually had minimal head and lacing. All the regulars on it and so not hanging about and doubtful it will be on by Tuesday late evening and with Charlton FC at home at 7pm and so some may well sup it up after the game before I get out belatedly. Still flavoursome with a good maltiness from 5 different malts as in the governor's tasting notes. It had still a moreishly bitter mouthfeel lingering. |
| Philip Pirrip | Not Tried | 08 Dec 2024 | New cask came on late |
| Hogan Sampling | | 08 Dec 2024 | Fresh on and good head and lacing. Stuck to it for that reason. An old-school bitter from York with no added sweetness. Just a bitter taste in the mouthfeel. Slightly malty also but not overly from a whole five different malts involved, as referred to in the tasting notes, and with a pleasantly dry, oily aftertaste. Perfect pint or two was this one! As my dad would say, good beer is like fresh bread out of the oven and so liquid bread. With this superb bitter just on, it was working its magic. |

| Hogan Sampling | | 15 Sep 2024 | New on and very malty with 5 different ones according to the micro's tasting notes. Good carbonation and a lingering hoppiness. |
| Philip Pirrip | | 25 Feb 2024 | Second out of a new cask. A very flavoursome pint but one was enough for me |
