Tasting Summary

These comments are the opinion of the individual reviewer and represent what they thought of the beer on a particular day in a particular pub. If a review is less favourable, it may be because the beer suffered somewhere in the supply chain between them and the brewery.

Hogan SamplingPoor06 Sep 2025 Surprised to see it still on and now on its fifth day. The barman gave me a taster first and told me there were only about 4 pints remaining in the cask. This micro opens at 12 noon on Saturday unlike at 4pm Monday to Thursday and from 2pm on Friday and so even more amazed still on. Head and lacing, now poor, and holding it, not a chance. This Berkshire bitter from north-west of Finchampstead and south-west of Wokingham presented a dry bitter first bite. Its lip-smacking crispness all gone as indeed all life in it. Still the odd fruity note there in among its hoppy bitterness. The biscuity, caramelly malt now far less pronounced. All conditioning gone and no punchiness left. Doing its best to hang onto its dry Cascade hoppiness. Only just palatable and so moved onto what everyone else was on, too, and a fresh one on today!
Hogan SamplingGood05 Sep 2025 Now the fourth day on and I say day since this micro opens at 2pm on Friday unlike at 4pm Monday to Thursday. Surprisingly, still holding its head and lacing well and lasting to the end. This Berkshire bitter from north-west of Finchampstead and south-west of Wokingham presented a very bitter first bite. Not as good a lip-smacking crispness about it as when tried the evening before. A fruity hint pervading its moreishly hoppy bitterness. Still a biscuity, caramelly malt or two leaping up. Not the same conditioning as on its premier night or third night but still exerting a good punchiness. A lasting dry hoppiness care of its Cascade hops. Palatable enough to still stick to it!

Hogan SamplingGood04 Sep 2025 Third night on and still holding its head and lacing well and lasting to the end is this Berkshire bitter from north-west of Finchampstead and south-west of Wokingham. As on Tuesday when fresh on, a very bitter first bite. A good lip-smacking crispness about it with a fruity touch shining through its moreishly hoppy bitterness. A hint of biscuit and caramel-infused maltiness rising. Holding onto its conditioning well but a tad thinner to my taste buds than two evenings earlier. Its Cascade hop-infusions giving it a lasting dry hoppiness. Extremely moreish once again and so I stuck to it apart from a half of mild to end on!

Hogan SamplingExcellent02 Sep 2025 Fresh on and a welcome appearance after the recent Anspach & Hobday's The Ordinary Bitter hanging on since last Friday. This Berkshire bitter, from north-west of Finchampstead and south-west of Wokingham, presented much lively appeal. Head and lacing, very good, and lasting, superb with not a single decant required throughout its premier night's performance. A pleasantly very bitter first bite. A very mild fruitiness rising but a dependable moreishly hoppy bitterness pervading with a hint of maltiness joining in with biscuit and caramel flavouring to boot. A tasty dry hoppy bitterness playing out and making my lips smack open and shut with its great dry hoppy qualities lent by its touch of Cascade dry-hop at its climax before sailing down my hatch. Extremely moreish and so could do no more but remain stuck to it!
Philip PirripAcceptable25 Aug 2025 The headpour disappeared immediately to leave a totally flat ale
Hogan SamplingAcceptable25 Aug 2025 Third night on for this Berkshire-based bitter from south-west of Wokingham. Head and lacing present to start with but did not last even with a good few decants. A very bitter first bite. A hoppy bitterness rising from its English hops with a citrusy herbal note or two coming to the fore. A touch of maltiness not far behind with a biscuity caramel flavour presenting itself. A pleasantly dry hoppy finish aided by the use of Cascade hops, one of the most widely used hops by craft breweries in the US. A slight sourness lingering that was not there on its first or second nights sampled and perhaps denoting it is almost at its end.

Hogan SamplingGood24 Aug 2025 Second night on for this Berkshire-based bitter from south-west of Wokingham. Head and lacing, good, and lasting, almost. A hoppy bitter first bite. A good moreish bitterness aided by its English hops with a hint of citrus and herbs in on the mix. A biscuity caramel-infused maltiness gently bobbing up and down before sailing off with its dry hoppiness derived from its Cascade hops. Overall, a thinner taste than on its first night.
Hogan SamplingGood23 Aug 2025 First day on and which coincided with Charlton FC playing at home and so which meant some fans from the match had earlier also been fans of the 360 Degrees' Bluebell Sussex Best, a lovely bitter sampled the evening before, but this had sadly all gone. This Berkshire-based bitter from south-west of Wokingham came with good head and lacing and lasting. A very bitter first bite. A dry hoppiness rising from its English hops and a gentle bitterness winning over. A hint of biscuity caramel from its malts and a herbal and citrus note or two joining in. A pleasant hoppy bitterness playing out.
Hogan SamplingGood27 Jun 2025 Third night on for this best bitter from Finchampstead, south-east of Reading, in Berkshire. Head and lacing, surprisingly good. Holding onto it, fair. A good bitter first bite on it minus its maltiness from yesterday. The sourness gone also from my previous visit and so very poor. The odd biscuity and caramel-flavouring also not as pronounced. Far less fruit-infused in its hoppiness. It has improved for me from yesterday's visit in my general synopsis. Still a dry bitterness from the odd Cascade hop or two. A citrus-fruity kick in its finale not now evident thankfully and so very poor.

Hogan SamplingGood26 Jun 2025 Second night on for this best bitter from Finchampstead, south-east of Reading, in Berkshire. Head and lacing and holding onto it, good. A bitter malty first bite. A slightly astringent sourness rising up among the odd biscuity and caramel-infused maltiness. A fruit-infused hoppiness from its English hops winning over. In its finale, a dry bitterness aided by a touch of Cascade hop veering up but a good citrus-fruity kick prevailing and strong.

Hogan SamplingGood23 Mar 2025 Only its second night on but the place opens early afternoon on a Sunday and so I asked how this Berkshire-based bitter, outside Wokingham, was doing and the barman told me it was nearly out and so bought a few before he then took it off. Still great head and lacing and lasting. A bitter and hoppy first hit rolled into one. A dry and moreishly bitter mouthfeel lingered into its aftertaste with just a hint of sweetness from its citrus-infusions. Many others had also enjoyed it that night as I was told.
Hogan SamplingGood22 Mar 2025 Fresh on and very good head and lacing and literally foaming was this Berkshire-based bitter from south-west of Wokingham. A thirst-quenching bitterness in the first hit. A moreishly bitter mouthfeel with a maltiness coming to the fore with biscuit and caramel flavourings. A slightly citrusy aftertaste with a long-lasting dry hoppiness. This one had replaced the Bexley ruby bitter which had just gone off before I got in and so well timed.
Philip PirripGood16 Feb 2025 Brown and overly malty
Hogan SamplingGood16 Feb 2025 Good head and lacing on this Berkshire bitter and on its second night on. A bitter and hoppy first hit. A dry bitterness in the mouthfeel with a hint of maltiness lingering.
Hogan SamplingAcceptable15 Feb 2025 Apparently just on as recently as an hour before. It came with good head and lacing on this Berkshire bitter. It had a very fresh, sharp kick to it on the first taste of it. Cooking apples came to mind and it stayed very sharp to the bottom of the glass.

Hogan SamplingGood09 Feb 2025 Fresh on today and great head and lacing on this Berkshire bitter. A very bitter first hit. A slightly strange mouthfeel with herbal notes but helping to wash down my earlier dinner with lots of Italian herbs in it. Could not get the citrus in the beer as also described in the tasting notes. A moreishly dry, bitter mouthfeel lingering.
Philip PirripNot Tried12 Dec 2024
Hogan SamplingGood12 Dec 2024 Second evening on and good head and lacing on this Berkshire brew. A very bitter, bitter mouthfeel with a dry aftertaste lingering.
Hogan SamplingGood03 Dec 2024 Very good head and lacing as only the second night on. A very bitter first hit with a strange mixture of tastes from hops with grassy, herbal and citrus notes according to the tasting notes. You are left with a lingering dryness and very moreish.
Philip PirripNot Tried26 Sep 2024
Hogan SamplingGood26 Sep 2024 Good head and lacing. Only slightly bitter in mouthfeel without much other flavouring.
