01 Mar 2025 (Hogan Sampling)
Busy for my late afternoon visit and to meet one other real ale drinker from south-east London already there and following a walk with a fellow drinker and walker around the nearby Kenley Aerodrome. Fast, friendly service from the barman and with five real ales on. My first visit since April 2024 and served by two local railway stations, Whyteleafe and Upper Warlingham, both just some 5 minutes away.
Siren Craft - Memento | 3.80 | | Very good head and lacing on this Berkshire-based bitter, south-west of Wokingham. A bitter first hit. A slightly citrusy fruitiness in the mouthfeel with caramel flavouring from its malts. It had a moreishly dry bitter aftertaste lingering. Its head and lacing remained hugely visible throughout. |
Oakham - Citra | 4.20 | | One session IPA can lead to another and this time from Peterborough with some head and lacing to start with but did not last. It had a dry, sweetish first hit. A very dry mouthfeel lingered with hoppy and citrusy notes thrown in. Not sweet in the aftertaste with just a dryness persisting. |
Tiny Rebel - Great Scott | 3.40 | | After a good hour and half walk around the local Kenley Aerodrome this first one of 5 real ales on came as a welcoming one to start on. It was suitably thirst-quenching. This session IPA from Newport, near Cardiff, came with good head and lacing and proved refreshing enough and in good condition. A lightly fruity first hit on this somewhat opaque mixture. A pleasantly fruity series of flavours to it with a dryish mouthfeel lingering. At just 3.4%, I was surprised it was as much as £5.00 a pint but this price appeared to be fixed for all of the real ales on. But you do get a 20% discount when paying with Bitcoin or Ethereum, both crypto-currencies. I will try to remember to bring these with me next time! |
Titsey - Sheriff ESB | 4.80 | | One ale with a caramelly maltiness followed another with this one from the Kent/Surrey borders, south of Biggin Hill and north-west of Westerham. Not as much head and lacing as on the Siren Craft bitter, but this ESB's first hit was its unmistakable sweetish maltiness. A pleasantly bitter mouthfeel followed and persisted into the aftertaste. Had not tried it before and would certainly try it again! |
Disruption IS Brewing (sub-brand of Ascot) - Shadow Of Darkness - Vanilla Stout | 5.00 | Not Tried | Not tried before this vanilla-flavoured stout from Camberley, north-west of Guildford, but others in my party did and liked it. I was not sure how it would cope with my takeaway fish and chips on the way back! |
27 Feb 2024 (Magnus Greel)
Early evening and heaving I managed to share a table with a couple of other chaps and enjoyed my beers in this friendly and welcoming micropub.
Oakham - Slovenian Wolf Single Hop | 3.90 | | A dry peppery complex ale with hints of honey aniseed with a hoppy kick. |
Wantsum - Overlord | 6.00 | | Full bodied peaty yeasty fare with an agreeable resinous bite |
Oakham - Bite the Bullet | 5.00 | Not Tried
Kent - Kent Golding Bitter or KGB | 4.10 | Not Tried
23 Feb 2024 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit, soon into conversation with a railway signalling design engineer.
Ossett - White Rat | 4.00 | | Light bitterness |
Tring - Scrum Down | 4.00 | | A fine basic wet dog bitter |
XT Brewing - No. 8 Porter | 4.50 | Not Tried
Disruption IS Brewing (sub-brand of Ascot) - Chaos More Chaos | 5.00 | Not Tried
01 Nov 2023 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit. Of all the gin joints and micropubs in all the towns in all the world, a pub quiz has to be taking place on my random visit. Meant all seats taken, they are rarely held here too.
Marble - Pint (was 3.9%) | 3.40 | | The Guv confirmed the cask label said it was 3.9% and not the downgraded new 3.4% version or else I should not have chosen it. Not an inspiring ale |
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Iron Ore (collaboration with Derby) | 4.80 | | Poured as flat as a pancake from the gravity dispense chilled room. No life in this pint, making it a real chore to finish. No off-flavours to make it undrinkable but really best not sold in this condition |
Westerham - British Bulldog | 4.10 | Not Tried
Heritage (formerly William Worthington Brewery) - Charrington Oatmeal Stout | 4.00 | Not Tried | Where is this brewed now the Heritage Brewery is closed |
13 Sep 2023 (Philip Pirrip)
Spur of the moment evening visit until close. Few in and conversation soon lit up. A cornucopia of stuff on the walls to feast the eyes on.
Bewdley - Worcestershire Sway | 5.00 | | A good bitter hit with lots of body but poured quite flat |
Chiltern - Session IPA | 3.90 | | Can't remember when I last had Chiltern, if ever, on draught. A full on malty and hopped hit with lingering bitterness |
Timothy Taylor - Boltmaker (formerly Best Bitter) | 4.00 | Not Tried
Nuttycombe - RCH Old Slug Porter | 4.50 | Not Tried
02 Jul 2022 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit badly planned as was on impulse after several other geographical options were thwarted by train difficulties. Found it eventually having walked past it once already. All micropub physically and in attitude. Walls and ceiling plastered with pump clips and transport memorabilia.
Lord's (cuckoo at Golcar) - Chosen Man New World Bitter | 4.40 | | New cask on - very dry aftertaste |
XT Brewing - Animal Brewing Hop Kitty | 3.90 | | New cask on albeit poured with little head or condition. Another ale with a very dry aftertaste |
Barsham - Barsham Oaks | 3.60 | | Quite sour hopping, clearly end of cask and turned out to be |
Arbor Ales - This Time Next Year Rodney | 6.00 | | Been on a few days I suspect as poured totally flat, really strong caramel vanilla taste though. A half sufficed |
Parkway (formerly Glastonbury Ales) - Session I.P.A. | 4.20 | Not Tried | Ran out |
Anarchy - "I Dont Tip" | 6.20 | Not Tried
Leigh on Sea - Press Strata To Play | 4.50 | Not Tried
12 Dec 2015 (thebrewingman)
Saturday lunchtime and we found this gem in the beer dessert known as East Surrey. A few non-league Whyteleafe supporters in who were good company as we were on our way to Merstham v. Tonbridge Angels. Very welcoming.
Flying Monk - Elmers | 3.80
Crafty Brewing - Dark Sessions | 4.00 | | Improved as the glass emptied. |
Downlands (formerly South Downs) - Best | 4.10
Harbour - India Brown Ale | 4.90 | | A different take on an IPA/Brown Ale. |
Goddards - Mocha Stout | 4.20
