10th visit of Reading and its environs: The finale stopping point and just minutes from Reading Station seemed the obvious choice to end with. Although a Fuller's managed pub, it managed one guest from Mondo, located in Battersea, south-west London, and a collaborated brew with Hogs Back Brewery in the village of Tongham, Surrey, just north of the A31 Hogs Back road between Guildford and Farnham. Busy but not overly so to be afforded a table and seating alongside in busy Reading of a Saturday mid-evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mondo - Juliet (collaboration with Hogs Back)3.80GoodGood head and lacing on this pale ale collaboratively produced to mark International Women’s Day by Mondo Brewing Company from Battersea, south-west London, and Hogs Back Brewery in the village of Tongham, Surrey, and lasting to the end. A hoppy first hit emanating from this blend of British-grown barley, oats and wheat. A dry fruited hoppiness rising and winning over its fruitiness, comprising hints of mango and pineapple, from home-grown Cascade in the copper and finished with a dry-hop of Hallertau Blanc and Citra. A dry hoppy note sailing out with the merest hints of green grapes and gooseberries. Served in good condition here.

Evening visit of respite after the slow Elizabeth line visit all stops from far south east to far west. So very waiting roomish here - could be so much more done to make it a local go to pub too.

Not my first visit here, but my first visit since Fuller, Smith and Turner bought it. Not too busy in the afternoon but I imagine it becomes very hectic in the evenings.

A quick pre-train pint. Pub much smartened since acquisition by Fullers.

Evening. Great stuff - pub's website says closes 11pm but at 2231 a sentinel at the front door said the pub had closed at 2230 and always did on Mondays. He could show me no opening hours notice and when I asked a barman he said the pub was closing early as there were lots of travellers in!!

11:30 Half an hour to spare at Reading station so thought I would look in the Guineas. All beers Fuller's. I took one look and turned and left. I have seen this so many times before, the purveyors of bland beer buy a thriving pub with a reputation for a good choice of micro-brewery beer and then completely change the concept and kill what made the pub popular. A great shame.

17:50 On way back from Newton Abbot realised that arrival time at Reading would allow a connection with the Guildford Cross Country service that uses the recently re-opened Reading dive under. This place provided an excellent waiting room. Busy outside in the sunshine, quieter within.
