Beer | ABV | Score | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Sambrook's - Candlemaker Black IPA | 4.50 | Near black in colour and very nice. Did not quite have the hop load that one expects from a beer in this style. | |
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried | |
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Zephyr | 4.40 | Not Tried |

Weltons - Buckland Shag | 4.70 | I don’t often select a Welton’s beer, but I was intrigued by the description of this one and enjoyed it. Pale gold and brewed with toasted oatmeal and coriander. | |

Beer | ABV | Score | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Moorhouse's - APA Special | 4.80 | I had high hopes for this one given its promised mix of US hops. But this pint was cold, flat and lifeless, dominated by sticky malt and with the hops struggling to shine. I hope for a better example elsewhere. | |

The pub is found in Wanstead, Greater London, E11 2RL.
Unlike many JD Wetherspoon houses, this is actually a very long-standing pub, having been established in 1716 and the current premises dating from 1906. In High Street it is a very large pub, with extensive seating areas on two floors and all the trademark ‘Spoon’s features. A Truman’s house in its day, it was acquired by Wetherspoon’s in 1992. Closed Sunday 13th October 2024.
We have visited this pub 5 times, seen 29 different beers and tried 7 of them.
