Very relaxed early-Sunday evening atmosphere in here, enhanced by two chaps in Hawaiian shirts playing vintage vinyl. Some confusion when I asked for my beer to be served in a straight glass and the barmaid thought I was trying to change my order to a glass of wine.
North Riding Brewery - Cascade Pale | 4.00 | | Yes, a very nice, full-on, golden, hoppy beer – as you would expect from the name. |

Pleasant in the main, front bar.
Revolutions - Go-Go American Pale | 4.50 | | A lovely American Pale Ale. |
Otley - O5 Hop Angeles | 4.80 | | A Red IPA. Cherry red in colour and sweet. Hop tastes not prominent. |
Hackney - Oktoberfest Beer | 4.80 | | On keg dispense. Cold and carbonated, sweet and malty. A pretty authentic Oktoberfest/Märzen-type I think. I had forgotten that I do not like the style very much. |

By The Horns - Diamond Geezer | 4.90 | Not Tried

Not officially on tonight’s pub crawl itinerary, but several of us found it impossible to walk past such a lovely pub.
Pressure Drop - Freimann’s Dunkel Weisse | 4.80 | | - Inexcusable of me to drink a ‘keg’ beer on a CAMRA crawl I know, but this is a dark brown, smoky, wheat beer, that is suited in my view to chilled dispense. |
Siren Craft - Liquid Mistress Red IPA | 5.80 | | A beer I have greatly enjoyed in the past, but this quick half was in lacklustre condition and did not impress. |
Magic Rock - Rapture | 4.60 | Not Tried
East London (ELB) - Foundation Bitter | 4.20 | Not Tried
Siren Craft - Broken Dream Breakfast Stout (superseded by 6.5% version) | 6.00 | Not Tried
Otley - Trio | 3.50 | Not Tried
Hop Stuff - Fusilier | 4.30 | Not Tried
29 Nov 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Very busy beer festival in progress, with London-brewed beers on a stillage in the rear room and special beers from further afield on the main bar.
Wild Beer Co. - Modus Operandi Grand Cru | 8.20 | | A hugely complex, smooth, dark beer. Sweetish, strong and warming. Barrel-aging gives it a woody, winey character. In fact by the end of the glass it tastes more like wine than beer. |
Pressure Drop - Street Porter | 4.50 | | Black and smooth, with roasted barley and caramel flavours. |
Beavertown - Benzera | 3.90 | | Golden. Low-strength but high hop levels. Chinook hop in particular. Quite dry. |
Hackney - Hackney Homegrown | 4.00 | | Perhaps the last green hop beer of the season. |
Dark Star - American Pale Ale (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 4.70 | Not Tried
Moor - Unfined Confidence | 4.60 | Not Tried
Hackney - Golden Ale | 4.00 | Not Tried

There is a cider festival underway, taking up many of the handpumps this-evening. This is a very pleasant pub. The garden is much improved since I last ventured outside.
Siren Craft - Liquid Mistress Red IPA | 5.80 | | Very deep red, to the point that this is almost a black, rather than red, IPA. Either way, superb, and in perfect condition. |
Offbeat - Unhinged Ginger | 4.50 | | Golden. Strong, dry, ginger tastes. Just a touch medicinal. |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur | 5.90 | Not Tried

I do like this pub. I missed all the hype at the weekend over the London launch of beers from the new Siren Craft Brewery, so it was good to catch up with them here and have a chance of a brief chat with brewer Ryan Witter-Merithew who was at the bar to introduce his beers.
Caveman (latterly a cuckoo at Leatherbritches) - Citra (brewed at Kent Brewery) | 4.10 | | Having not yet made the pilgrimage down to Swanscombe, I was pleased to see this on the bar. Pale gold in colour, with a fresh, lip-smacking, hoppy taste. Really good, just my kind of thing. |
Siren Craft - Sound Wave | 5.60 | | Very much in the US Pale Ale style, this is an amber-coloured, smooth, fruity, peachy beer. Dry-ish and obviously strong. |
Siren Craft - Liquid Mistress Red IPA | 5.80 | | Deep red in colour, and possibly the best in the Red IPA style I have tried yet (until the next one). Right at the base of the taste is some sticky, treacly, caramely malt, which helps to give the beer a good body. And over the top of this is oodles of good hop flavours. |
Siren Craft - Broken Dream Breakfast Stout (superseded by 6.5% version) | 6.00 | | Described as a ‘Breakfast Stout’, this is a near black, oatmeal stout. Very smooth, warming, creamy. Quite dry, rather than the sweetness you can sometimes get with oats. |
Siren Craft - Under Current | 4.50 | | An amber-coloured. Just a hint of sweetness in the malt, but mostly a hop-dominated beer. |
Otley - OG | 5.40 | Not Tried
Summer Wine (SWB) - Mokko Sweet Milk Stout | 6.00 | Not Tried
Sunny Republic - St Wite's Ale | 5.00 | Not Tried

A Pump takeover and Meet the Brewer night with East London Brewery (ELB), and Stuart is holding court in the side bar.
East London (ELB) - Quadrant Oatmeal Stout (now please use 5.5% entry | 5.80 | | Black oatmeal stout, creamy and roasty. |
East London (ELB) - Pale Ale | 4.00 | | Amber coloured, with a good malt presence and balanced hopping. |
East London (ELB) - Jamboree | 4.80 | | Amber in colour with a good citrusy hop taste. |
Arbor Ales - Bock Star | 6.40 | | On low-pressure keg dispense. A recipe devised by Adrian Tierney-Jones and described as an ‘Indian Pale Bock’ – a unique beer style I would imagine. Actually it came across to me like a Dutch Bokbier, which is not my favourite style. Dark amber, sweetish, caramel, hops in the finish. |
Dark Star - American Pale Ale (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 4.70 | Not Tried
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur | 5.90 | Not Tried
Buxton - Buxton Spa | 4.10 | Not Tried
East London (ELB) - Foundation Bitter | 4.20 | Not Tried
East London (ELB) - Nightwatchman | 4.50 | Not Tried

This pub has more than doubled in size since I was last here, with a large back room now in use and a rather scruffy yard beyond that. We had comfy seats at the front by the log fire.
Bowman - Nutz | 5.00 | | A dark brown bitter with a smooth, thick, nutty taste. |
Arbor Ales - Chinook | 6.50 | | Golden in colour. A massive hop monster. |
Late Knights - Hairy Dog Black IPA | 6.00 | | Brewed ‘up north’. A black IPA with a big hit of Apollo hops. |
Frys (renamed Bute) - Ruby Chough | 4.50 | | Red, with grainy malt and a bit thin. Hint of wood shavings. Three stars may be generous. |
Oakham - Citra | 4.20 | Not Tried
Magic Rock - Rapture | 4.60 | Not Tried
Arbor Ales - Oyster Stout | 4.60 | Not Tried
Marble - Draft | 3.90 | Not Tried

2150 hours visit. An amazing Antic transformation and an oasis hereabouts. A young crowd predominates and they are drinking reals. Pleased I hopped off the bus for one here.
Fyne - Maverick | 4.20 | | £3.60 pp did hurt after previous snips in Leyton. This was the last one out but did not suffer for it. |
Salopian - Oracle | 4.00 | Not Tried
Hawkshead - Red Best Bitter | 4.20 | Not Tried
Otley - O3 Boss | 4.40 | Not Tried
Magic Rock - Carnival | 4.30 | Not Tried
Late Knights - Crack of Dawn Pale Ale | 3.90 | Not Tried | The web implies this is a cuckoo outfit but in whose nest I have not so far ascertained |

Antic seem to be working their usual magic here. This might be the top end of Clapton’s notorious ‘Murder Mile’, but there is a large and polite crowd in tonight. The pub remains work-in-progress and a little “undressed” as the management put it. But two rooms are now in use and the kitchen opened last week. The last time I was in here was probably to see some nasty 80s rockers.
East London (ELB) - Nightwatchman | 4.50 | | Nice to drink this in what must be the nearest outlet to the brewery. |
Arbor Ales - Single Hop - Phoenix | 4.00 | | Very pale and pungently hoppy at the expense of all else. |
Blindmans - Icarus | 4.50 | Not Tried
Ha'Penny - London Stone | 4.50 | Not Tried
Redemption - Trinity | 3.00 | Not Tried
Devilfish - Stingray | 5.50 | Not Tried
