Visits Details

03 Jan 2026 (Hogan Sampling)
5th visit of the outing: Almost back into the main part of Tonbridge after our exploration to the Cardinal's Error and Punch & Judy for what was now early evening. This expansive old Victorian mansion of a pub was divided into dining on one side and drinking on the other. The rear of this drinking area was occupied by a couple playing pool. Record covers and even 45rpm records adorn the ceiling on this side of the pub. For a Shepherd Neame pub this size, unusual to see just one cask on. The other cask was displayed as if on when not on bizarrely! Winning the prize for the least choice alongside the Cardinal's Error of all our visits so far! The earliest recorded licensee is dated 1861 and the pub was most definitely built as such and from about that time.

Shepherd Neame - Whitstable Bay Pale Ale3.90GoodGood head and lacing and lasting on this Faversham-brewed pale ale. A lightly hopped first hit. A hoppy fruitiness rising with floral and pine notes bobbing up aided by its aromatic Challenger lending it pine and citrus notes, and Slovenian Styrian Goldings hops adding spicy, floral and earthy touches. A fruity hoppiness sailing out with hints of grapefruit. A lingering bitterness aided by its sweet maltiness prevailing.
