1st visit of the outing: Dating from 1642, this timbered Free House was a delight to walk into and quiet for my mid-afternoon arrival and with six real ales to choose from, including one house ale called Black Horse Ale at 4.1% but no clues given as to who the brewer is. Friendly, prompt service from the barman. This ancient backstreet boozer is recommended by the South Herts CAMRA branch as part of their Hertford Ale Trail, described as an afternoon beer festival on the move!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Wye Valley - Butty Bach4.50GoodThis Herefordshire golden ale, Butty Bach, the Welsh term meaning ‘little friend’, presented very good head and lacing and lasting. A hoppy sweet first hit from its Maris Otter and Crystal malts. A dry fruited hoppiness rising from its Fuggles, Goldings and Bramling Cross hops. A good fruited note lingering on its downwards journey. The Wye Valley Brewery's beers, launched in 1985, can be found in 1,200 pubs and bars throughout the West Midlands and South Wales and has gone from 10 brewers' barrels a week to an average of 1,000 barrels per week.
