Busy footfall for the last half an hour of serving with the hardened regulars, the lesser spotted and not forgetting the fiddlers out in the rear seating area.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Steam Town - Barton Bitter4.00ExcellentFresh on was this bronze-to-amber-coloured Hampshire bitter from the Eastleigh-based microbrewery, 5.5 miles north of Southampton town centre, and set up in 2017. Very good head and lacing and lasting all the way. A bitter but fruity sweetness in its first bite. A biscuity maltiness rising from its Maris Otter malt, alongside its Crystal and pale malts, lending it a toasted brown bread flavouring and the odd roasted chestnut thrown in. A hoppy fruitiness winning over aided by its First Gold and Goldings hops affording it citrus and marmalade notes with hints of apricot, strawberry and red berries. A markedly malty bitterness sailing out with a spicy hint; a dry hoppiness lingering. In top form in every way and so stuck to it despite hearing there was another new kid also on the block this evening.

I detected a sigh of relief from the hardened regulars and certainly myself and a regular dog on parade, as the family running this micropub are dog-friendly, that the January-launched monthly quiz with a huge loudspeaker on tripod did not rear its head in February. This was of course the last Sunday in February and following the quiz's inaugural appearance in January but unannounced to the mere regular in unless on social media which I am not. Usual Sunday night footfall therefore of regulars alongside a few of the lesser spotted for the last half an hour of serving.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - Single Hop Kazbek Rye Porter5.30Excellent2nd beer of this visit: Fresh on today was this Kentish porter from just south-west of Canterbury, at Chartham. The Sunday hours start from 1pm and so it could have been well established for my late evening tasting and then pint of this. Superbly creamy on its head with a lacing lasting all the way. A dry malty note on its first bite from its Maris Otter malted barley. Fruit flavourings ambling up derived from its single Kazbek hops from the Czech Republic and known for hints of pineapple, passion fruit, peach and watermelon. A maltiness prevailing with a chocolatey hint and subtle notes of sherry derived from its rye and where caramel and crystal rye aid touches of toffee, raisins and red berries, while chocolate rye aids cocoa and coffee flavours. A very dry bitterness on the final voyage downwards. Very moreish and so hope to sample again a day or so on.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 54.40Good1st beer of this visit: Third day on for this Ramsgate-brewed copper-coloured bitter and still displaying an excellent head and lasting with its lacing to the end. A slightly fruited first hit alongside its toffee malt joining the equation but certainly not overly sweetened. A dry bitterness rising alongside those red berries and a possible spicy blackcurrant in on the performance from its four varieties of Kentish hops including East Kent Goldings and Fuggles. A malty note rearing up from no less than its six different malts with hints of biscuits and caramel to tantalise my taste buds. A moreishly hoppy bitterness prevailing. A very malty note sticking to its guns on its finale downwards. Very palatable and especially for its third day on with lacing still on show right to the end. Stuck to it but for a new kid on the block, the Canterbury Kazbek Rye Porter at 5.3% to end on.

Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 54.40GoodSecond night on for this Ramsgate-brewed copper-coloured bitter and still exhibiting a good head and lacing and lasting well. A fruited bitterness in its first bite. A malty bitterness rising aided by its toffee malt among its six different malt varieties with a caramelised biscuity touch. A bitter hoppy note muscling in from its four varieties of Kentish hops including East Kent Goldings and Fuggles. A fruity bitterness sailing out with hints of red berries and spicy blackcurrants with a hoppy fruity blast. In good nick and so stuck to it.

Quiet footfall with just a sprinkling of Thursday night regulars on parade for the last half an hour of serving alongside the lesser spotted.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Kent - Old Skool4.10Acceptable1st beer of this visit: Third night on and now not displaying a good head with its lacing unable to last on this bitter from Birling, north of West Malling, Kent. A dry bitterness to kick off with. A fruity hoppiness rising from its local Kentish varieties such as Goldings and Fuggles used but now with a sharpness emerging but not quite vinegar yet. Still hints of dark fruits with a subtle sweetness from its caramel malt. A dry hoppiness lingering. Certainly not in the same condition as when presented two nights earlier.
Vocation - Golden Ale (collaboration with Fierce)4.60Acceptable2nd beer of this visit: Fourth night on and not a lot of head and with its lacing not lasting on this golden ale from Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, and made in collaboration with Fierce Beer, located in Aberdeen, Scotland. A sweet fruity first bite. Flavours of orange zest and marmalade rapidly rising with floral hoppy hints and derived from its selection of British-grown hops. A late addition of Olicana hops, a British variety developed in the UK as part of the Charles Faram Hop Development Programme*, in the brewing process was made to deliver its specific notes of orange zest and marmalade. A tropical fruit or two most definitely exploding on the palate. A lingering hint of mango for me. Not really my cup of tea but it added a bit of excitement after the equally tired condition of the Old Skool bitter. Brewed with honey and selected hops, it also uses Roots Revival malts to champion UK regenerative farming in sourcing a climate-conscious variety in partnership with Paul's Malt to support soil health and biodiversity. *The Charles Faram Hop Development Programme was established in 2009 and is a breeding initiative aimed at creating sustainable, agronomically sound British hop varieties with "New World" aroma profiles. Olicana was released commercially in 2014 and developed to provide intense, tropical hop characters such as mango and grapefruit that are traditionally associated with American or Southern hemisphere hops but here using UK-grown plants.

Busy footfall for my extended late evening visit due to the midnight extended closing time to accommodate Charlton FC playing at home, losing 1-3 against Portsmouth. Some of the fans who attend this micropub therefore had extra time along with everyone else to sup after the late evening finish of the game. A good beer for me made this all the more worthwhile!

Kent - Old Skool4.10ExcellentFresh on and displaying very good head and lacing and lasting all the way on this traditional bitter so-named from Birling, north of West Malling, Kent. A dry bitterness to kick off with. A fruity hoppiness from local Kentish varieties such as Goldings and Fuggles rising through my open goal with hints of dark fruits such as plum and fig colliding. A subtle sweetness from its caramel malt tackling well. A moreish hoppiness ending the game for my taste buds with a dry fruited hoppy note or two being sent off and whistling downwards.

Another Sunday evening visit for the last half an hour of serving and no sign of the quiz having returned from its inaugural January Sunday night and with just one more February Sunday remaining to test this one out. A mix of the usual Sunday regulars in and a few of the more occasional.

Kent - Kent Golding Bitter or KGB4.10Excellent1st beer of this visit: Fresh on was this Birling-brewed bitter, north of West Malling in Kent, and a very good head on display with its lacing lasting all the way. A moreishly hoppy bitter first bite with hints of toasted bread crusts and biscuit. A fruited bitterness rising from its berry-fruits lending it a pleasant sweetness. A gentle herbal bitterness from its Goldings and Fuggles hops winning over. A honey-infused and spicy malty note from its variety of local malts sailing downwards. In very good nick and so mostly stuck to it apart from the ESB to end on.
Steam Town - Ralph Dutton ESB5.80Good2nd beer of this visit: Second night on and still displaying a very good head with its lacing clinging on, on this Hampshire extra special brew from Eastleigh, north of Southampton. A sweetened malty first bite with hints of stone fruit. A dark fruited hoppiness rising from its UK Goldings and fruit-filled Jester hops. This was balanced by a good helping of maltiness emanating from its Maris Otter, crystal, chocolate and wheat malts. A pleasant bitterness winning over before paddling downwards. Still perfectly palatable to me.
