Afternoon visit with work colleagues. Pub much-smartened.
Woodforde's - Tundra | 4.60
London Brewing Co. (Bohemia) - 100 Oyster Stout | 4.60 | | Tasty but flat condition. |

09 Apr 2018 (Stephen Harris)
I actually had work reasons to be here, entertaining a small group of visitors from the Netherlands. I told them it was most unusual to go to the pub in work time, and was then embarrassed by a succession of work colleagues coming into the pub. Other beers were available.
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40
Ilkley - Hanging Stone | 5.00 | | A decent Oatmeal Stout |
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
01 Nov 2017 (Stephen Harris)
Quite a session here after work with a good-sized group of work colleagues. This kind of thing is now rare and needs planning, rather than being part of the culture as it once was.
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | Very enjoyable. |
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Umbel Magna | 5.00 | | I hadn’t drunk this for ages and had forgotten just what an excellent beer it is. |
Goldmark - Moshpit | 5.60 | | Golden and hazy. A full-blown IPA. |
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
Adnams - Pleisure Principle | 3.40 | Not Tried
15 May 2017 (Stephen Harris)
I had to see a man about a dog in the very early evening after work, and this seemed as good a place as any to conduct our business. I then found a couple of former work colleagues in situ, so it was good to catch up with them too.
Goose Eye - Blackmoor | 4.00 | | A chocolatey, black Mild. |
Cotleigh - Long Eared Owl | 4.90 | | A straightforward brown Bitter. |
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
Sambrook's - Wandle | 3.80 | Not Tried
Adnams - Pleisure Principle | 3.40 | Not Tried | Apparently this is Adnam's Lighthouse re-badged. |
29 Mar 2017 (Stephen Harris)
After-work drink-up with some colleagues, not necessarily linked to today’s Article 50 milestone. I also drank a beer called ‘Aurora’ but did not note the brewery name.
Pheasantry - Stout | 4.80 | | A really good, black Stout. |
Daleside - Stout | 4.20 | | Highly drinkable. |
Adnams - Pleisure Principle | 3.40 | | Perhaps it’s just me and I’m missing something, but I thought this was a very ordinary pint. |
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
Sambrook's - Wandle | 3.80 | Not Tried
16 Jan 2015 (McGargle)
I liked this place. Warm, bustling and friendly. Also had The Seeker (I think) trying to hide its Charles Wells provenace.
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | | Missing that Harvey's trademark yeasty ywang. |
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Coaster (or Cornish Coaster) | 3.60 | Not Tried
29 Oct 2014 (Stephen Harris)
This has been consistently the best pub in the area where I work for years now – so not obvious why I have become such an infrequent visitor. It’s just too near to the office for comfort I think.
Old School (OSB) - Absent IPA | 5.50 | | A really good, dry example of that rare breed, a full-strength, English IPA. |
Arundel - Autumn Breeze | 4.60 | Not Tried
Elgood's - Indian Summer | 4.80 | Not Tried
Timothy Taylor - Havercake Ale | 4.70 | Not Tried
Hop Vine (formerly Burscough) - Mere Blonde | 4.00 | Not Tried
17 Jul 2013 (Mick)
Very busy early evening, lots of people outside on the pavement. We sat inside in the relative cool.
Green Jack - Lurcher Stout | 4.80 | | Very nice, smooth rich with all the toasty roasty notes a good stout should have. |
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried
Sambrook's - Junction | 4.50 | Not Tried
Milestone - Summer Breeze | 4.60 | Not Tried
27 Dec 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
The Thursday evening mild drinkers filled up what would otherwise have been a quiet evening here.
Dow Bridge - Bonum Mild | 3.50 | | Classic low hopped sweet and malty East Midlands style mild. Dark brown in colour with hints of toffee and liquorice. My score 17/20. |
Tring - Mansion Mild | 3.70 | | Dark brown mild with a full flavoured malty character with hints of chocolate and roast malt. A little hop in the background leading to a fruity finish. My score 16/20. |
07 Jun 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Busy with a visit from the Thursday evening mild drinkers.
Moorhouse's - Black Cat Mild | 3.40 | | Good as ever, chocolate and liqourice malt flavours with some fruit in the finish. My score 16/20. |
Cotleigh - Nutcracker | 3.40 | | Brown mild making a rare appearance, fairly dry and malty with low hoppiness and a dryish finish. My score 15/20. |
Southport - Dark Night | 3.90 | | Dark brown mild with a bittersweet flavour, some hoppiness in the dry finish. My score 15/20. |
Corvedale - Katie's Pride | 4.30 | | Dark brown strong mild with a dominant flavour of nutty crystal malt not entirely to my taste. My scoe 14/20. |
