Second visit of the outing: My first visit in almost a couple of years to this quaint old Victorian pub on the outskirts of Redhill in the direction leading to Reigate and busy early evening but with prompt, friendly service. A delight to learn the local community behind saving it as a community pub have been successful in raising the funds to buy the pub’s freehold. A good selection of real ales on and the two I had in superb nick.

Pilgrim - Progress Best Bitter4.00Excellent2nd beer of this visit: Very good head and lacing and lasting on this locally brewed bitter from the Pilgrim Brewery at Reigate set up in 1982, making it the absolute oldest independent micro-outfit in the whole county of Surrey and found off West Street in the market town of Reigate, sitting on the ancient tracks where the old-time travellers used to trudge. A very dry bitter first bite on this lovely copper-amber hued drop going back to the brewery’s start, and named after the wandering souls who marched along the historic Pilgrims' Way. A biscuity maltiness rising from its Maris Otter behind its sweet, and crusty bread biscuit base, Crystal throwing down a heavy dollop of caramel sweetness, and Chocolate malt and Roast Barley rendering a toasted maltiness and baked pastry flavouring. A pleasantly fruity hoppiness joining in from the tossing of an international mixture of classic and modern varieties into the kettle. Its British Pioneer and Whitbread Golding Varieties from local soil exuding a sharp, woody cedar touch with a honeyed garden spice. Its American hops unleashing a vibrant punch of pears and orchard fruits, and its Slovenian hops behind its floral hoppiness. A day earthy hoppiness winning over for me with a bittersweet orchard fruit and spiced woodiness and floral notes on the slide out down my red lane. Served in very good form with plenty of carbonation in the mouthfeel.
Long Man - Green Hop Bitter4.40Excellent1st beer of this visit: Served with very good head and lacing and lasting all the way on this green hopped ale from brewing that got its gears turning in 2011, with the very first drop pouring out into in 2012, in setting up their copper and mash tuns inside a converted flint barn on Church Farm, in Litlington, East Sussex, within the boundaries of the South Downs National Park. A dry fresh hoppy first hit and rising on this autumnal tipple aided by the "Two Farms" double-act, and where brewed in cahoots with the folk over at Tibbs Farm in Sussex who plucked the green foliage straight from their bines and rushed it over to them in under four hours from harvest. A very fresh hoppiness pervading from the undried Sussex Green Hops harvested and unkilned, leading to these verdant virgin hops exuding a burst of zesty citrus combined with a deeply refreshing, resinous herby bitterness. My snout was wafted with a grass-brushed lemon grove aroma, while my palate delighted with a crisp, luscious leafy zip washing over the sweet malt foundation. Spring Malting Barley grown right there in the surrounding Church Farm soil lending a sweet and comforting bready biscuit base, alongside a delicate addition of Malted Wheat behind its doughy roundness and this green ale’s frothy white top. A lingering fresh hoppiness sticking all the way down my gutter-lane. Presented in superb nick.

A scenic walk up a hill and along side roads which afforded a view of the surrounding hills around Redhill, meant we got here just before mid-afternoon. It was the busiest I have seen it on my third visit here with the single bar almost at capacity. A warm welcome from the barmaid and prompt service. It was another delight of this visit, this wet-led community pub.

Dorking - Red India Ale5.00GoodPresented with good head and lacing which stayed for most of my half that I was taking slowly at 5%. A malty first hit on this local Surrey red ale from just outside Dorking with a dryish and spicy mouthfeel. It had a malty, mixed with fruity, finish lingering.

Busy for my early afternoon visit to this pleasant community pub with 4 guest real ales on. Our party of 3 took a more scenic route along the backstreets, with some great views afforded by climbing up a bit along these streets, and in coming from The Garland. We were met with a friendly welcome and prompt service.

2nd visit of the day's pubs-crawl. Not far from The Garland but a slightly steep hill to climb up on the last leg. Arrived thirsty on this very mild early afternoon and to be met by a friendly welcome and prompt service. A community pub that is seeking to now buy the premises, it was full of character and charm in this elegant Victorian-looking establishment and started to fill up for the rugby as I left.

Mid afternoon friendly welcome and quiet just a couple of other small groups dotted about in the spacious garden area. We sat at the mid level shaded area where orders were taken via a QR code link and arrived shortly after.
