The Shirker's Rest (Free House)
Visits Details
16 Nov 2024 (Hogan Sampling)
Busy when I got here mid-evening but prompt service. Full on the ground floor (seating also upstairs) but squeezed in and was seated next to a local real ale brewer no less and from Orbit Brewery, just off the Walworth Road. He explained they are having a tap-takeover at The Shirker's on 21st November and hope to have their London Porter real ale ready for this.
Anspach & Hobday - The Shirker's Best (re-badged The Ordinary Bitter) (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | | Good head and lacing. A malty mouthfeel with a moreishly good bitter aftertaste. |
Bexley - Bexley's Own Beer (BOB) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Elusive - Anthemis | 4.80 | Not Tried
Elusive - Bright Lights, Big City | 6.00 | Not Tried
01 Jul 2024 (Philip Pirrip)
Long evening visit until close. Apparently only 2 cask ales on when weather is warm.
Elusive - Easy Mode | 4.30 | | Apparently the staff here were involved with this brew. No great USP to this ale |
Three Acre - Spring Golden | 4.50 | | Pretty bland taste in good condition, though head and lacing soon lost |
06 Oct 2022 (Philip Pirrip)

Anspach & Hobday - The Shirker's Best (re-badged The Ordinary Bitter) (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | | Fine head, lacing and mouthfeel |

Brockley - We Are Lewisham Golden Ale | 4.50 | Not Tried
13 Jul 2022 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit until close using the function room up the steep flight of stairs.
Anspach & Hobday - The Shirker's Best (re-badged The Ordinary Bitter) (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | | Best seller here on price I suspect |
RedWillow - Weightless | 4.20 | | Zingy reasonably subtle citrussy |
RedWillow - Headless | 3.90 | | Rather bland and seemed rather tired |
Mad Squirrel (formerly Red Squirrel) - Sapling | 4.80 | Not Tried
22 Jun 2022 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit. Managed to get a seat and table in the bar. All outside seats taken including what appears to be a rocking chair.
Anspach & Hobday - The Ordinary Bitter (was 3.7%) | 3.40
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - DDH Jaipur | 5.90 | | Not normally on cask. Not pre-warned it was a milky murk. OK but bears no resemblance of any sort to usual Jaipur |
Brockley - We Are Lewisham Golden Ale | 4.50 | Not Tried
08 Jun 2022 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit, my first here. Impressed by the friendliness of all customers and staff and owners. Clearly cask fans and modern keg too. Should be a honeypot when the students return for autumn term in Goldsmiths opposite.
Anspach & Hobday - The Shirker's Best (re-badged The Ordinary Bitter) (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | | Re-badged The Ordinary Bitter. Better example of this than I recall having elsewhere. Mid brown basic English bitter |
Brockley - We Are Lewisham Golden Ale | 4.50 | | Usually no lover of Brockley beer this had good tastes, someone said a new brewer has taken over |
