Fourth stop on this St Albans’ visit: The perfect lunchtime pub as I also visited in November 2025, and so I knew what to expect: a not too dear choice of pub-food and fast turnaround for what was chosen. Prompt, friendly service early afternoon at the bar for some grub and a selection of six real ales on and five from Tring Brewery. I followed members of the Enfield & Barnet CAMRA branch to this one from The Beehive and through some of At Albans’ historic and quiet backstreets.
| Tring - Ridgeway Bitter | 4.00 | | Very good head and lacing and sticking all the way on this light brown, caramel-hued English amber ale from Dunsley Farm, off London Road, Tring, and where the brewery moved to in 2010 following being launched in 1992, and some 17–19 miles north-westerly of St Albans by road. A lightly hoppy first hit. A hoppy bitterness emerging with red fruited flavours climbing up from its Styrian Goldings that are primarily grown in Slovenia and Austria. They are not part of the English "Golding" family hops but the clonal selection of the English Fuggle variety. Hints of lemon, green tea and sweet fruits delighting my taste buds. A biscuity maltiness joining in. Its hoppiness winning over and prevailing. Very moreish and served in top condition. |

5th visit of the outing: A back street local also in Keyfield Terrace along with The Beehive but this has an impressive six real ales on, including the semi-local one from Tring. Although a Punch Taverns-managed pub, it features two beers free of tie. Friendly, prompt service and I also made this my lunch venue as almost approaching mid-afternoon and to aid soaking those earlier beers up. Many of the others on the South Hertfordshire CAMRA-led outing were already here as had not gone off-piste as I had.
| Tring - Side Pocket for a Toad | 3.60 | | Good head and lacing and lasting on this Tring-based golden ale. A hop-infused dryness in its first bite. A dry but fruited hoppiness coming to find me aided by its American Cascade hops exuding lingering citrus and floral notes. Not as good for me as Tring's ESB in The Beehive but still decent enough and admirably washed my burger and chips down. |

Friendly and welcoming back street locals pub with just a few others dotted about. Tastefully refurbished since my previous visit though sadly lacking the previous cosy mustiness that I crave!
