23:30. I finally arrive at my "basecamp", my home for the next 7 nights! Not stayed here since Oct 2008 having been a regular on stopovers here for five years. Much has changed since those heady days. The pub has gone up & down on the ale front I've heard, and it was sad to hear that long standing landlord, Terry, passed away earlier this year. But I think the place has now slowly been improved, with the loss of the kitchen area to create another lounge, and the decor is well up to date, much more trendy, and the property next door is also part of the plan to create more letting rooms and a restaurant I hear. The current letting rooms here are all under refurbishment at this time and slowly but surely, the place will be modernised. Good to be back. A real old friend! Current 2013 gbg entry and 16 times previous in; 1995-7/9/2001-12
Hop Vine (formerly Burscough) - Sutler's IPA | 5.50 | | Just time for two more winners from a good range of ales. Another new ale too. My comrade from Stockport and I, we homed in on this top ale straight away. Really good stuff. |

26 Jan 2012 (Stephen Harris)
This really is a rough old boozer and it was not showing its best qualities on a quiet Thursday evening.
Brightside - Winter Ale | 5.00 | | Deep copper in colour, with grainy malt. |
Cross Bay - Winter Moon | 3.60 | | A jet black mild/porter. But in very poor condition, well past its best, and hard to judge its true character. |
Robinsons - Hatters Dark Mild | 3.30 | Not Tried
Adnams - Gunhill | 4.00 | Not Tried
Wincle - Lord Lucan | 5.00 | Not Tried
Dancing Duck - Nice Weather (was Nice Weather 4 Ducks) | 4.10 | Not Tried
Two Roses - Glorious | 4.00 | Not Tried
20 Jan 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Beer festival in progress with jugs behind the bar and a good selection on the pumps.
Geeves - Gunwale Dance | 4.20 | | A crisp citrussy and hoppy golden bitter with a good balance of flavours. My score 15/20. |
Big Bog - Frosty Bog | 4.00 | | Pale bitter with a dryish bitter flavour and a little hop in the finish. My score 14/20. |
