7:30pm and it looks like the pub has been hit by an earthquake – spilt beer, broken glass, table detritus, discarded newspapers, wobbly City-types. In reality, it is just the aftermath of a Monday evening rush hour session.
London Brewing Co. (Bohemia) - London Lush | 3.80 | | Pale gold in colour. It is a hoppy beer with a sharp, lemony taste. |
London Brewing Co. (Bohemia) - St Pancras 250 | 4.80 | | Hints that this is a good IPA-style beer, but it is badly let down by flat condition. |
London Brewing Co. (Bohemia) - Never Mind the Kent Hops | 5.50 | Not Tried
London Brewing Co. (Bohemia) - Flying the Mags | 3.80 | Not Tried
04 Jun 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Just time for a quick half in here before Dave and I head to Cheapside for an evening of cycle racing.
Harviestoun - Summer Legend | 3.50 | | Described as an ‘Easy IPA’, this is golden and hoppy. |
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Hadrian and Border - Tyneside Blonde | 3.90 | Not Tried
St Austell - Nicholson's Pale Ale | 4.00 | Not Tried

Portobello - Absolutely | 4.20 | Not Tried | Badged as 'Madness Brewery'. |
30 Mar 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Mid-evening and not overcrowded.
Celt Experience (now brands are owned by Evans Evans) - Galaxy Equinox | 5.60 | | An amber-coloured, robustly-hopped IPA, with a sticky malt base that is slipping towards caramel in taste. |
BRÚ - Red Ale | 4.20 | | A real surprise. Neither particularly red (in the low light of this pub anyway), nor sweet. In fact it has a delicious taste of tangerines. |
Box Steam - Tunnel Vision | 4.20 | Not Tried
St Austell - Nicholson's Pale Ale | 4.00 | Not Tried
Navigation - Golden Anchor | 4.30 | Not Tried
Brains - Phonics | 4.10 | Not Tried
16 Sep 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Quick early-evening pint when the pub is rush-hour busy. So long since I’ve been in a Nicholson’s pub that I completely forgot to ask for a discount using the Nicholson’s App.

Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Hook Norton - Lion (aka Cotswold Lion) | 4.00 | Not Tried

16 Feb 2015 (Stephen Harris)
First time I’ve been in here since the recent refurbishment. I can’t see much difference in truth. Relatively quiet on a Monday evening.
Redemption - Pale Ale | 3.80 | | Superb condition really brought out what great beer this is. |

15 Nov 2014 (Nick Willis)
I liked it in here, far more relaxed than the 'spoons over the road. Breakfast was good too.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Runner | 4.00
Brains - Café Phoenix | 4.40 | | A nice porter, better than Brains usual efforts. |
Elgood's - Black Dog Mild | 3.60 | Not Tried
St Austell - Saint Nich's Festive Ale | 4.50 | Not Tried
15 Apr 2014 (Stephen Harris)
Considerably more peaceful than the White Hart, although just as busy.
Brains - Three-C'Son | 5.00 | | Golden in colour. A lip-smacking Saison. Everybody seems to brew a Saison these days and this is a lovely example. Fruity and spicy. Just a little sourness. Good European hop flavours. |
Maxim - Black Maxim | 4.00 | | Very disappointing Milk Stout. More sourness than lactic sweetness, no sign of roastiness. I suspect the problem was more in the cellar than at the brewery. |
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Jarrow - Isis | 5.00 | Not Tried
St Austell - Nicholson's Pale Ale | 4.00 | Not Tried
Itchen Valley - Blackcurrant Mild | 3.70 | Not Tried
16 Jan 2014 (Stephen Harris)
A typical Thursday night rush-hour crush in here – and I only came here because the pub I wanted to visit was intolerably crowded.
Bristol Beer Factory - UPA | 4.50 | | UPA here stands for Ultra Pale Ale, and that serves as a pretty good description of the beer. |
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Mad Squirrel (formerly Red Squirrel) - Scottish Ale | 4.30 | Not Tried
Thwaites - Nutty Black | 3.30 | Not Tried

30 Sep 2013 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening - probably last customer served before Madame la Guillotine fell.
St Austell - Nicholson's Pale Ale | 4.00 | | Tasted like a change of recipe to me as seemed to be more citrussy than of late |
