Visits Details
23 Jan 2024 (Philip Pirrip)
Late evening visit until close. As you will read a disappointing ale experience tonight.
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | | Best of a generally lacklustre selection tonight |
Woodforde's - Nelson's Revenge | 4.50 | | Distinctively average on all counts |
Flack Manor - Hedge Hop | 4.90 | | Poured flat and worse still handed over with fingers holding all around the drinking area at top of the glass |
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Twickenham (also uses sub-brand Old Hands) - Summer Down Under | 3.90 | Not Tried | A rather unseasonal time to be selling this |
Anspach & Hobday - Bermondsey Pale | 3.40 | Not Tried | Dumbed down for duty saving I assume |
21 Nov 2023 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit until close. Once again the 6 hand pumps round the corner had pumpclips showing for some beers not available. Why DO they do that here?
Surrey Hills - Ranmore Ale | 3.80 | | 4½* New cask just put on. This was glorious in every way. A tribute to the brewer and the cellarperson |
Oakham - Winter Wisp | 4.10 | | An unassuming beer in good condition |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried

24 Oct 2023 (Philip Pirrip)
Late evening visit until close.
Surrey Hills - Ranmore Ale | 3.80 | | Good enough to have a second one, albeit it had to be rushed down. Superb sour bitterness |
Banks's - Zululand Zulu Blonde | 4.50 | | Leftover JDW festival ale. Lacked the bitterness I hoped for but still well rounded |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried

17 Oct 2023 (Philip Pirrip)
Late evening visit until close. Please stop the habit of having pumpclips showing for beers that are not available, on the pub's left of the bar dogleg. There were two Surrey Hills ones there I wanted!
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur | 5.90 | | Top notch for flavour, as it should be |
Adnams - Yazoo Dos Perros | 4.80 | | JDW festival, darkish and malty |
Evan Evans - Challenger | 4.30 | | Lots of bitterness, soon ran out after another customer or two |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried

Shepherd Neame - Cracklewick | 4.80 | Not Tried
11 Sep 2023 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit until close. Got off to a right bad start finding both Surrey Hills beers I wanted had pump clips showing for display purposes only. After some protestations the barperson turned them round. Bah!
Beartown (latterly part of Manning Brewers) - Bear Ass | 4.00 | | A mellow ruby ale holding very good head and lacing. Best of the evening |
Twickenham (also uses sub-brand Old Hands) - El Dorado Pale | 4.20 | | A dry tongue rasping bitterness |
Oakham - Ernest | 4.00 | | Rather bland single hopper |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | | Bore no resemblance to any Abbot I know. Far too chilled and even hand cupping the glass failed to restore much flavour |
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Adnams - Mosaic Pale Ale | 4.10 | Not Tried
Flack Manor - Romsey Gold | 4.00 | Not Tried | Ran out as I ordered it |
04 Sep 2023 (Philip Pirrip)
Late evening visit until close. Went quite well after working out which doors were opening to get in. Guest ales badged at £2.49pp but was charged £2.50pp. Till / badge mismatch?
Pheasantry - Dancing Dragonfly | 5.00 | | Good enough indeed to have a second one |
Surrey Hills - Greensand IPA | 4.60 | | Rather sour taste and slight haze. Most un-Surrey Hills like |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Banks's - Ringwood Fortyniner | 4.90 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Beartown (latterly part of Manning Brewers) - Bear Ass | 4.00 | Not Tried

Twickenham (also uses sub-brand Old Hands) - Mysteries of the Galaxy | 4.50 | Not Tried
17 Jul 2023 (Philip Pirrip)
Rare afternoon visit after local chores.
Surrey Hills - Gilt Trip | 4.60 | | Surrey Hills is high in my estimation. All traditional English bitter styles right up my street |
Wild Card - IPA | 5.20 | | Although wrongly not declared on the pump clip I suspected this would be a murky milk shake resembling concoction so only ordered a half, and it was just that. Mellow bittering made it OK |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Dorset Brewing Company - Durdle Door | 5.00 | Not Tried
Oakham - Shine | 3.70 | Not Tried
Glamorgan (formerly Kite) - Thunderbird | 4.50 | Not Tried
Wild Card - Gold | 4.20 | Not Tried
Wild Card - Stout | 4.60 | Not Tried
09 Feb 2022 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit until midnight close. Handy for late trains home. Impressed by the fast moving wide range of real ales being the best I have seen in a Wetherspoon's house since the pandemic affected customer demand.
Oakham - Green Devil IPA | 6.00 | | First rate |
Surrey Hills - Ranmore Ale | 3.80 | | Eventually ran out |
Hogs Back - England's Glory | 4.40
Dorset Brewing Company - Jurassic | 4.20
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Banks's - Ringwood Fortyniner | 4.90 | Not Tried | Came on late but staff seemed to have problem with it heavily fobbing so uncertain if on or off |
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Twickenham (also uses sub-brand Old Hands) - Naked Ladies | 4.40 | Not Tried
Windsor & Eton - Father Thames | 4.80 | Not Tried | Ran out |
20 Apr 2018 (ChrisE)
Morning visit for breakfast, nobody behind the bar when I arrived, and I managed to find myself last in the queue when somebody finally did arrive. For some reason there were no fried eggs available today so I made do with poached. I managed three cups of coffee before finally breaking my mid day rule (well it was 12:00 in Belgium) and I had a pint. I did not make a note of all the beers on offer.
Maxim - Double Maxim | 4.70
04 Aug 2017 (ChrisE)
Morning visit it was fairly quiet except for the No Children area which was full. Friendly and attentive staff. Other beers were available in addition to those that I have listed below.
