Visits Details
07 Jan 2023 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit until midnight close. A beer oasis with quality the watchword. Superb cask but the keg prices are really "premium".
DEYA - Astral Planes | 4.80 | | Delicious porter |
Vocation - Naughty and Nice Caramel Cookie Chocolate Stout | 5.50 | | Had all the promised flavours, good enough for two, but heady too, albeit at 6 sovs a pop |
Fyne - Jarl | 3.80 | Not Tried
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Burning Sky - Plateau (was 3.5%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
04 Mar 2020 (Stephen Harris)
A pleasant evening at a pub which is no-longer on one of my well-trodden routes.
Northdown - Merry Margate | 3.80 | | Pale and bitter. |
Team Toxic (cuckoo at Liverpool Brewing Company) - Empress of Cydonia | 5.20 | | Initially sweet, then sharp quince flavours take over. Bit of lactose in here I think. I like it. |
71 Brewing - Rivet Red | 4.80 | | Red/brown. Toffee malt flavours with hops very much in the background. |
Ilkley - Stout Mary | 4.50 | Not Tried
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Ilkley - Joshua Jane | 3.70 | Not Tried
01 Jul 2019 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit until 11pm close. I get the feeling here the ales will always have good condition. Some brim measures were on the cusp of being annoying, maybe being related to tasters given.
Anspach & Hobday - Keith & Marisa's Bitter | 3.70 | | A mildly bittered ale |
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Civil Servant Boy's Friday Pale | 5.70 | | Presumably all English hopped, a slow drinking strong ale |
Neptune - Tetramagia | 4.30 | Not Tried
Neptune - Wooden Ships | 4.70 | Not Tried
Tiny Rebel - Issy and Aki's | 4.80 | Not Tried | Described cliptually as a Trifle IPA, yes Trifle not Triple. Described from behind the bar as being very sweet |
Siren Craft - Living The Dream | 6.30 | Not Tried
22 Oct 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Early Monday evening and relatively relaxed in here.
Hopcraft (experimental side of Pixie Spring) - Temple of Love | 3.80 | | Summit, Chinook and Cascade-hopped version of this beer. Pale and hoppy and very dry. |
Hopcraft (experimental side of Pixie Spring) - Keep me Away From a Naked Flame | 4.20 | | Hazy Golden Ale. Tasted a bit odd to me, in an indefinable way. |
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Stancill - Stainless | 4.30 | Not Tried
Holler (formerly Holler Boys) - Cheat Mode | 3.80 | Not Tried | Presumably from Holler's new brewery site in Brighton. |
22 Aug 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Late-afternoon into early evening, until becoming crowded.
Stewart - Voss IPA | 6.50 | | Strong and a bit spicy and tasting of marmalade. |
Fourpure - Coastline | 6.00 | | From key-keg. Shockingly sour gooseberry, but also sweet vanilla. Plenty of hops too. Really good. |
Hop Kettle (Cricklade & Swindon Breweries) - Liquid Highway | 4.50 | | An easy-drinking golden bitter with some orangey hop flavours. |
Hopcraft (experimental side of Pixie Spring) - Campania | 5.00 | | A vanilla ice cream flavoured Milk Stout. But something wrong and its a little too sharp where it should be sweet. |
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried | Currently badged as 3.7%. |
Blackjack - Red Rye Saison | 7.00 | Not Tried
Hop Kettle (Cricklade & Swindon Breweries) - Precious Metal | 8.60 | Not Tried
11 Apr 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening and very busy in here.
Fourpure - Chai Milkshake | 4.40 | | From key-keg. Amber-coloured, hazy and very spicy. |
Siren Craft - Suspended in Spelt | 4.00 | | Amber in colour, cloudy and wheaty (or should that be spelty?). Oozing with ripe fruit flavours. |
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Cromarty - Atlantic Drift | 3.50 | Not Tried
Cromarty - Rogue Wave | 5.70 | Not Tried
26 Mar 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Quite a big crowd around the bar, early on a Monday evening.
Cromarty - Atlantic Drift | 3.50 | | Easy-drinking, US-style Pale Ale. |
Cromarty - Rogue Wave | 5.70 | | Pale gold. A pleasant flavour with a good balance of hops and alcohol. |
Cromarty - Hit The Lip | 3.80 | Not Tried
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Cromarty - Kowabunga | 4.60 | Not Tried
Cromarty - Ghost Town | 5.80 | Not Tried
15 Mar 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Probably the first time I have been in here early on a Thursday evening. At 6:30 it is jammed. Two deep at the bar trying to get served and precious little room to stand with a pint. Many are spilling outside onto the pavement.
Crouch Vale - Astra | 4.10 | | A pale beer full of hoppy goodness from Citra and Mosaic. |
Mourne Mountains - Glafy | 4.50 | | A bone dry, black Irish Stout. |
Crouch Vale - Slovenian Cardinal | 3.90 | | Quite a heavy, amber beer with little relief from the hops. |
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Bad Seed - Amarillo Pale Ale | 4.50 | Not Tried
Bad Seed - Bandit | 4.50 | Not Tried
11 Jan 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening. A little over a year since I first came in here I have concluded thre is some particularly uncomfortable furniture here. I must be getting soft.
Hawkshead - Jingle Fells | 4.50 | | I usually say that I don’t like spiced Winter Ales – but for some reason I have been enjoying them this year – this one included. |
Gun - Craft Beer Co. Vermont Pale Ale | 6.10 | | Cloudy gold. Full-on, fruity US hop flavours. |
Bad Seed - Citra Pale Ale | 4.50 | | I can’t resist any beer with the word ‘Citra’ in its name. |
Dark Star - American Pale Ale (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 4.70 | Not Tried
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
05 Nov 2017 (Stephen Harris)
Sunday afternoon and I note several of the same customers sitting in the same seats as last week and the same band setting up for music later. I must not become a creature of habit.
Evil Twin - Imperial Mexican Biscotti Cake Break | 10.80 | | Served from keg – a collaboration beer with Westbrook Brewery. A monster of a beer. Black and smells of fruit cake. Taste starts with cake, moves into biscuit and ends with chilli. Fabulous. |
Hawkshead - Cumbrian Five Hop | 5.00 | | Golden and very hoppy. |
Track - Going to the Sun | 7.00 | | From key-keg. Cloudy pale gold. An IPA – very fresh and lovely. |
Hawkshead - Windermere Pale (was 3.5%) | 3.40 | | Golden and nicely crisp. |
Redemption - Fellowship Porter | 5.10 | Not Tried
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
