I'd been getting various texts from Ian raving about Goachers Old so I just have to have a Goachers beer. However, after being side-tracked into visiting the Ship at Conyer I was going to head off home. ...but Isabel insisted we came to the Black Lion for a packet of crisps. "Great idea", I said. Great pub this. A real gem.
Goacher's - Real Mild Ale | 3.40 | | Excellent condition. Quite well balance and full of fresh flavours. |
Goacher's - Fine Light Ale | 3.70 | Not Tried
Goacher's - Best Dark Ale (aka Original) | 4.10 | Not Tried
Goacher's - Crown Imperial Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried

Lovely pub in a lovely village. Could have stayed here ages, except we had to leave. The Pawley Farm apple juice is excellent for anyone having to drive.
Goacher's - Fine Light Ale | 3.70 | | Very full, rich and marmalade-y, but just lacked some condition for me. |

The Black Lion. 4 Goachers beer; superb interior; proper landlord; great setting. As my friend Cam would say, "It doesn't get much better than that". Ian had kindly driven me to the pub and we got there about 7:30. Not many in but it was a Tuesday. We chatted about beer, and espcially Belgium beer which, as people who know me well can testify, is a subject close to my heart. Unfortunately Ian got a phone call that meant he needed to get back home swiftly so I hope all's well when he gets back. Top night; really enjoyed it.
Goacher's - Fine Light Ale | 3.70 | | Okay, Ian'll nit-pick about condition (yes it was a little warm and a little un-energised) but the flavours! The flavours were just great. Marmalade and toasted malt; superb. |
Goacher's - Real Mild Ale | 3.40 | | Really good milky mild coffee beer. |
Goacher's - Crown Imperial Stout | 4.50 | | Great beer with rich, well balanced, slightly acrid malt. Black and milky great. I love Goachers. |
Goacher's - Best Dark Ale (aka Original) | 4.10 | | Nice toasted malts. Good Goacher's bitterness. Nice. |
22 Jul 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
A busy evening here with a visit from the Thursday evening mild drinkers by preserved bus from Sittingbourne.
Goacher's - Real Mild Ale | 3.40 | | Dark and slightly smokey with a good malty flavour and low hoppiness. My score 16/20. |

Gem of a pub. Got here with Jane at 2.30pm and we were the only people in. The interior is just so great and coupled with the 4 Goacher's beers this has to be one of my top 5 pubs.
Goacher's - Real Mild Ale | 3.40 | | Excellent condition. Milky with coffee and hints of chocolate. |
Goacher's - Best Dark Ale (aka Original) | 4.10 | | Roasted malt and syrupy bite. Excellent condition. Good quality Goacher's but then it's Goacher's so I'd expect nothing less. |
Goacher's - Fine Light Ale | 3.70 | Not Tried
Goacher's - Crown Imperial Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried

My second visit to this pub and I must admit, I was very impressed. I loved the decor, the atmosphere, the locals coming in for a drink or lunch, the landlord and landlady and especially the beer.
Goacher's - Best Dark Ale (aka Original) | 4.10 | | First pint was drinkable, but lacked that malty intensity. After that it was plain sailing all the way and Andrew and myself ended the session with 2 pints of it each as it was perfect. |
Goacher's - Fine Light Ale | 3.70 | | Very good indeed. Very hoppy for a Goachers beer actually. |
Goacher's - Crown Imperial Stout | 4.50 | | Too much liquorice and molasses for me, I liked it when it was all smokey bacon. |
Goacher's - Real Mild Ale | 3.40 | Not Tried | The sip of Andrew's was very chocolatey. |

Arrived about lunchtime opening with Jane, Cam, Ian and Martin (and Mac, Cam's dog). Good dog friendly pub this by the way. What a fantastic pub this is. By about 2pm it was very busy with locals coming in for a drink or their lunch. We were particularly impressed by a fellow who ordered a half of Goacher's Light and half of Young's Light Ale as the concept of a "Light and Light" seemed interesting. We stayed until 3pm when the pub closed and had an excellent time.
Goacher's - Fine Light Ale | 3.70 | | Lovely. Fresh oranges and a suprisingly leafy hop bitter bite at the end. |
Goacher's - Best Dark Ale (aka Original) | 4.10 | | Ian's first pint of this was a bit watery but I though I better have it anyway so I ordered it in the next round. My pint was nothing like Ian's previous one. This was the best Goacher's Dark I've had for probably 6 or 7 years. It truely was, "Goacher's for the Goacher's Drinker". Looking at my notes sober I see I wrote, "If I wasn't marrying Jane I'd marry this", a comment that didn't go down too well with Jane at the time I recall. |
Goacher's - Real Mild Ale | 3.40 | | Coffee and chocolate with hints of semolina. Very good. |
Goacher's - Crown Imperial Stout | 4.50 | | The Smoaky Bacon crisps flavour of this from last year seems to have gone. This was sour beer tasting of rich tar and oystery oilyness. Perfectly good but more like Goacher's Old than Stout. |

The fifth and final stop in the Canterbury, Whitstable and Herne Bay CAMRA branch's Mystery Bus Tour. Ah the Black Lion. We arived just before closing but got servered fine (probably thanks to Mike phoning ahead). What a great pub and what an end to a great pub crawl.
Goacher's - Real Mild Ale | 3.40 | | Fresh with coffee and roasted malt with that Goacher's tell-tale hop finish. |
Goacher's - Fine Light Ale | 3.70 | Not Tried | Had some of Mary's and it tasted lovely and fresh. |
Goacher's - Best Dark Ale (aka Original) | 4.10 | Not Tried | Badged as Goacher's Dark |
Goacher's - Crown Imperial Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried

As we were near by we couldn't turn down the opportunity to visit this gem. Still got 4 Goacher's beers on, still a fantastic pub and still one of my favourites.
Goacher's - Real Mild Ale | 3.40 | | Lots of creamy coffee with an undertone of milk chocolate. Wish I could have drunk more. |
Goacher's - Fine Light Ale | 3.70 | Not Tried
Goacher's - Best Dark Ale (aka Original) | 4.10 | Not Tried | Badged as 'Dark' |
Goacher's - Crown Imperial Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried

We walked around Faversham marsh to go to Shipwrights but found it was suffering a powercut and was closed. The nearest Goacher's serving pub was the Black Lion so we came here. It was virtually empty but that added to the charm of this outstandingly pretty pub. The landlord's a character too.
Goacher's - Real Mild Ale | 3.40 | | Smoaky flavours dominated making it reminiscent of Goacher's Crown Imperial Stout. Slight hint of chocolate and coffee too. |
Goacher's - Fine Light Ale | 3.70 | | Fresh oranges and a huskey hop finish. Wonderful |
Goacher's - Best Dark Ale (aka Original) | 4.10 | | Badged as 'Dark'. I'm beginning to wonder if Dark and Original are actually different. Anyway this was wonderfully smooth with a dark burnt sugar bite on the end coupled with that tell-tale Goacher's hop finish |
Goacher's - Crown Imperial Stout | 4.50 | | ...and again, wonderfull. Lots of burnt tar and wood smoke makes this a taste sensation. |
