23 Dec 2015 (McGargle)
Very busy. Clearly the new BrewDog on Castle gate hasn't affected custom.
Stone - Ruination 2 | 8.50 | | A new incarnation of an old favourite. Different malt/hop balance but still great beer. (Keg) |
BrewDog - Hopped-Up Brown Ale | 6.50 | | I'll just quote BrewDog: 'Brown ales are perfect foils for resinous C-Hops, as the piney elements of the latter contrast brilliantly with the sweeter, nutty elements of the malt bill. The best of both worlds.' Agreed. |
Stone - Go To IPA | 4.50 | | Lower abv so lacks some body but, as you'd expect from Stone, a huge hop resence and smooth malts. (Keg) |
BrewDog - Black IPA | 5.30 | | This didn't work too well. Starnge mishmash of malt and hops; no real direction. |
21 Mar 2015 (McGargle)
Well, in a lined glass I was served short measure - 10mm below. Asked for a top up to be told 'It'll be a full measure when it settles'. Asked again, more forcibly, when it was topped up with such bad grace. A case of the staff being more important than the customer. Not punk anarchy but rampant capitalism.
Wild Beer Co. - Ninkasi | 7.50 | | The bottled version is a fresh saison enlivened with apple juice and would be 4*. This was muddled: unclear style and the apple freshness was totally absent. (Keg) |
19 Feb 2015 (McGargle)
Busiest of the craft beer bars.
BrewDog - Dead Pony Club | 3.80 | | As ever. Painful rebranding to Dead Pony Ale. |
02 Feb 2015 (McGargle)
Still like this place but flumoxxed the staff when I asked why beer names hade changed. Not too sure I understand either but I'm guessing; corporate branding. Not quite the Punk way??
Stone - Arrogant Bastard (keg) | 7.20 | | Initially dull but improved as it warmed in the glass. |
27 Jan 2015 (McGargle)
Busiest of the craft beer bars.
Tempest - Brave New World (keg) | 7.00 | | Very drinkable IPA. |
Fyne - Sublime Stout | 6.80 | | Nothing like as rich as previous tastes. More a modest black IPA on this form. |
Stone - Ruination (keg) | 7.70 | Not Tried | On the board but finished. Poor marks BrewDog. Ten minutes later board updated. Top marks BrewDog. |
31 Jul 2014 (McGargle)
Busy as ever. Keen staff.
BrewDog - Dead Pony Club (keg) | 3.80
BrewDog - Jackhammer (keg) | 7.40 | | This was OK but the bottled versions have seemed somehwat fresher. Tried a sampler of the lime and tequila Jackhammer from the 'hop cannon'. Waste of good beer. Could be drinking lager and lime - didn't work at all. |
BrewDog - Libertine Black IPA (keg) | 7.00 | | Strangely muted. Where were the Simcoe hops? |
17 Jul 2014 (McGargle)
Surprisingly quiet. New staff haven't quite yet got the panache.
Stone - Imperial Russian Stout. | 11.00
05 Jun 2014 (McGargle)
Astonished. Really busy at 4.30.
BrewDog - Dead Pony Club (keg) | 3.80 | | Think they've got the hang of the new kit now. |
29 May 2014 (McGargle)
Some of the staff looked so miserable - most unlike BrewDog!
BrewDog - Dead Pony Club (keg) | 3.80 | | Clean refreshing new wave pale ale. |
BrewDog - IPA is Dead Simcoe | 6.70 | Not Tried | Staff couldn't get it to pour. |
30 Dec 2013 (McGargle)
Busy. Staff as enthusiastic as ever. All those empty pubs could learn from BrewDog's customer focus.
BrewDog - Dead Pony Club (keg) | 3.80 | | Get the feeling that BregDog are coming to terms with the new kit at Ellon and are, again, capable of producing top class beer. |
BrewDog - Libertine Black IPA (keg) | 7.00 | | Bursting with Simcoe this was back on top form. |
8 wired - HopWired | 7.30 | | Top quality tropical New World IPA. Great hop presence and smooth mouthfeel. |
