06 Aug 2013 (Jack William)
Early evening - few customers - all on laptops or smartphones. managed a brief conversation about the lack of conversation.
Greene King - Revolver | 4.00 | | New beer from GK to celebrate something about the Beatles. Bit bland (appropriately, I guess) - but well kept and refreshing. (Not exactly sure about the ABV - but under 4 - I will try to be more observant in future) |
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Skinner's - Cornish Knocker Ale | 4.50 | Not Tried
24 Jul 2013 (ChrisE)
Just after 3pm and the busiest that I have seen this pub for a long time, a group of cross-channel swimmers were adding their names to lists on the walls.
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00
Adnams - Fat Sprat | 3.80 | Not Tried
Woodforde's - Bure Gold | 4.30 | Not Tried
29 Jun 2013 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening. Quite busy. I was amazed looking at the range of the various cross-Channel swimming times endorsed on the walls.
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | | Best Harvey's Best I have had this year I'd say and told the guv so |
Windsor & Eton - Knight of the Garter | 3.80 | Not Tried
Greene King - Bohemian | 4.20 | Not Tried
Hop Back - GB (sometimes GFB) | 3.50 | Not Tried
22 Sep 2012 (Alenomore)
13:30 visit. Sad to note that this, a 2013 gbg entry, is currently closed, with an offical notice from Enterprise Inns posted on the windows dated 21/09/2012. Not sure if/when it will re-open. One to keep an eye on for the future.
16 Jul 2012 (ChrisE)
We had just walked down the hill from Dover Castle, and decided to see how this pub is doing now it has re-opened following a brief period of closure. A good selection of ales, friendly and efficient service, and a good number of customers enjoying the ales.
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | | Too cold for my liking. |
Bath Ales - Gem Bitter | 4.10 | | Good, but too cold for my taste. |
Loddon - Ferryman's Gold | 4.40 | Not Tried
Adnams - Southwold Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
22 May 2009 (Blair)
Second stop on our mini-crawl of Dover. This pub didn't look like much from the outside but my opinion changed the moment I got through the door. Feels like a proper seafarer's type of pub that feels like it hasn't changed in hundreds of years. I'll definitely be coming back here next time I'm in the area.
Matthew's - Bob Wall | 4.20 | | Light and hoppy bitter. A little malty with a bit of citrus, a really good beer actually. |
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Over The Moon | 3.80 | Not Tried
06 Feb 2009 (Dubbel)
First ever visit to this fine pub. Mixed clientele and a distinctive white-haired and bearded landlord who was very tolerant of my shoddy grip.
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | | Managed just a few sips of this before dropping and smashing the near-full glass on the hard wood floor in front of the bar. After repeated apologies it was time to head back to the hotel in eternal shame. |
Oakleaf (now see Fallen Acorn entries) - Heart of Oak | 4.50 | | A good, well-balanced premium bitter. Enjoyable at each sip. |
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried
Ringwood - Razorback | 3.80 | Not Tried
27 May 2006 (Andrew)
Very quiet for a Saturday afternoon. Loverly pub with 4 quite different rooms to choose from. Lots of comfy sofas in one of the back rooms I noticed.
St Austell - Tinner's Ale | 3.70 | | Way too cold. Wimpy malt and sickly hops. I've had this in Cornwall where it was lovely. Shame really |
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
Banks's - Ringwood Fortyniner | 4.90 | Not Tried
Breconshire - Rambler's Ruin | 5.00 | Not Tried
27 May 2006 (Ian)
Pretty quiet on a late Saturday afternoon, a couple of regulars in. Swimmers who swim The Channel are allowed to put messages and their times up on the walls which makes for some interesting reading.
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | | It was ok, but it had none of the intensity of flavour that a good pint can have. |
16 Jul 2005 (Ian)
Quiet on a Saturday lunchtime. There appeared to be some filming going on in the garden. Up to 4 beers on.
Hampshire - Wild Thing | 4.20 | | Copper colour with some flowery hop, good malt and not at all bad |
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
Banks's - Ringwood Fortyniner | 4.90 | Not Tried
