I was hoping to try this year's Early Bird but it wasn't on, so I started on the cider. A mixed group of people in, ranging from a family with a baby having lunch in the back to a few youngsters drinking lager and chatting up the barmaids. I sat with a friendly South African and watched England against the Windies (he seemed to want the Windies to win!).

I had a bit before the next train went so I watched the end of Man Utd 1 Everton 0 over half a pint of Kent’s Best

After visiting the Westgate 'Spoons I had about 16 minutes to get to the train station, buy a ticket and catch my train, so I thought that I would spend 9 minutes of that time in this pub. Quite quiet, with a few regulars in, but I had never been through to the back of this pub, which is in fact very pleasant and quite comfortable and relaxing. To emphasise this fact, there was a couple having a tete a tete at a table.

Shepherd Neame - Kent's Best4.10AcceptableGood condition, reasonably full in mouth, decent bitterness on the end rather than flavoursome hops. If I had not had the exposure to other better bitters, I would be very happy drinking this as a session best bitter. But I have, so I want something a bit more exciting.

Brian keeps coming here, so it must be good, and not just because it shows the football either.

Shepherd Neame - Porter4.80ExcellentThe porter was fresh, in beautiful full bodied condition. It sang as I drank it. Full, not sour, but with great Sheps yeast nose, choc in the middle and hoppy on finish. An unbelievable good combination. If Sheps keep going on like this, first a very good Late Red and then this spectacularly good porter. Then I may have to review my general opinion of them.

Considering it was Saturday afternoon it wasn't very busy. Maybe the garden was full as it wasn't too bad a day.

Shepherd Neame - Late Red4.50ExcellentThis beer proves that Sherherd Neame do produce beers with complexity. This was an excellent example, well served with a bubbly disappearing head. Spicy and sweet in the mouth and crisp and slightly drying in the finish.

I thought we were the only people in when we arrived but I think there were a few in the back room. Cricket was on the tele, so I was happy. Debbie decided the pub was "good" and one to visit again which was a relief.

Shepherd Neame - Bishops Finger5.00GoodThis was weird, it had a cherry cough mixture, medicinal aroma and taste. It was still nice enough but not like last week's version.

The front of the pub is quite narrow but it goes back a long way from the street, so inside it's just a bit gloomy, which suits me perfectly. Lots of original (looking) features, lots of dark wood, had the feel of what the Seven Stars used to be like.

Shepherd Neame - Bishops Finger5.00GoodCopper colour with lasting white head. A standard kind of beer but with smooth maltiness and a full mouth finish. Almost excellent.
