12:50 Very quiet. Interesting to watch casks being washed and then stacked in the bar. The Landlord of the Compleat Angler in Norwich came in after a meeting. Always seems strange to me to bump into someone you know in London.

Not so busy on a Monday evening and I had the luxury of a table to myself with space to read the evening newspaper.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Essex Street - Calcutta Club India Pale Ale5.50GoodA much better example than the last I tried of this beer, but still not absolutely sure about it.
Essex Street - Red Keg Malty Ale3.80AcceptableSuspected that I would not like this – it has two of the world’s least desirable beer descriptions in its name: ‘Red’ and ‘Keg’ – and I didn’t.
Sambrook's - Pumphouse Pale Ale4.20Not Tried

Hot, noisy and crowded, after work.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Essex Street - Dark Knight Brown Porter4.50ExcellentAn excellent London (Brown) Porter. Chocolate tastes. I had just been reading Adrian Tierney-Jones’ article on Porters in issue 2 of the Original Gravity magazine, so it was nice to get to drink a good one straight after.
Essex Street - Calcutta Club India Pale Ale5.50AcceptableI know that this had only been racked in the afternoon. To be honest it was not really in condition and a bit too green to be anything other than ‘acceptable’.

The January pub-trade lull does not seem to have lasted for long this year. Packed here in the early evening; noisy and hot.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Essex Street - The Gavel American Pale Ale4.30ExcellentGolden in colour. Very fruity hops to give an authentic APA taste.
Essex Street - 61 Nails Spiced Winter Ale4.80AcceptableDark brown in colour. Heavily spiced, with star anise particularly prominent.
Essex Street - Tempale Best Bitter3.80Not Tried

Lots of people in here tonight trying the beers and inspecting the menus – at this new brewery that launched last Thursday. Very keen pricing for the area with the home-brewed beers at £3:25 a pint.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Essex Street - The Gavel American Pale Ale4.30ExcellentTasty, golden, American Pale Ale, with fruity hops and a long bitter finish. Sparkling condition.
Essex Street - Tempale Best Bitter3.80AcceptablePretty much a standard brown Bitter – no more, no less.
Sambrook's - Powerhouse Porter4.90Not Tried

The pub is found in Temple, Central London, WC2R 3JF.

Basement brewpub, opened in November 2014 in a premises in Essex Street that has had a variety of previous lives under various themes. The brew kit is very visible on the way in, on two levels. The bar itself is decorated in the sort of urban/industrial chic that you might expect to see in Hackney Wick or Rotterdam. Tables split between those laid for diners and space for drinkers. Bench seating and a mixture of rough and ready tables (some trestle style) and chairs. This is a sister pub to the Cambridge Brew House. 6 handpumps and 16 keg taps. Re-opened late February 2022 after a long period of closure.

We have visited this pub 16 times, seen 39 different beers and tried 22 of them.
