Down some stairs off the street. Large basemen pub. Not too busy when I visited.
Essex Street - Brut Pale Ale | 4.00 | | Soft in mouth. Slight tart flavour. Pale hazy gold colour |
Essex Street - Gluten free Porter | 4.50 | | Good condition. Soft in mouth. Lots of roasted flavours. Hint of sweetness. Like a roasted dark mild really. |

Essex Street - American Red Ale | 4.00 | Not Tried

Monday evening and crowded. Lots of lawyers shouting at each other about something.

Essex Street - American Pale Ale | 4.30 | Not Tried
17 May 2018 (Stephen Harris)
I popped in during the early evening to see what goes on here these days. First I spotted Crystal Palace Brian at one of the tables and then he told me that there was a Meet the Brewer thing going on with Lost + Found Brewery of Horsham. So a quick visit turned into quite a long one.
Lost & Found - R23: Session Pale Ale | 4.60 | | From key-keg. Pale, hazy, sharp, citrus. |
Lost & Found - R30: Non-clear Fusion IPA | 6.50 | | From key-keg. Murky yellow colour. Very fruity plus a slightly sour edge. |
Lost & Found - R22: Fomosaic APA | 5.30 | | From key-keg. Pale, Mosaic-hopped hopfest. |
Essex Street - Temple Pale Ale | 4.20 | | This beer comes in various versions – today’s was dry-hopped with Cascade and Wakatu and was a suitably hoppy beer. Very bitter. |
Essex Street - Summer Pale Ale | 5.30 | | I struggled a little with this very malty, golden beer. |
Essex Street - Tempale Best Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried
Essex Street - Coffee Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried
Essex Street - Toast English Amber | 4.70 | Not Tried

I read recently that London now has in excess of 90 breweries and will soon pass the 100 mark. I resolved whilst sitting here to try to visit them all in 2017 – an impossible task I suspect as some will not be visitable and I may have to count ‘Meet the Brewer’ events. A quick headcount suggests that I am now on ten and a half for the year (ten breweries/taps visited plus one meet the brewer event) without really trying. No doubt it will become increasingly difficult.
Essex Street - Brown Toast | 4.10 | | I was pleased to try this beer, the first of the ‘Toast’ beers, brewed using leftover bread, that I have come across. It is a nice, smooth, deep ruby/brown Porter with some roastiness. |
Essex Street - Winter Golden Ale | 4.00 | | A rather middle-of-the-road Golden Ale. Does have some hop character. |
Essex Street - Tempale Best Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried
Essex Street - Calcutta Club India Pale Ale | 5.50 | Not Tried
23 May 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening and pretty relaxed in here.
Essex Street - Dark Knight Brown Porter | 4.50 | | Dark brown in colour. Good, smooth, roasty and chocolate tastes. |
Essex Street - Citra P.A. (was 4.5%) | 4.60 | | Now at 4.6%. Amber-coloured and, yes, it has the great taste of Citra hops. |
Essex Street - Tempale Best Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried
Essex Street - The Gavel American Pale Ale | 4.30 | Not Tried
Essex Street - Wally's Mild | 3.00 | Not Tried

Essex Street - The Gavel American Pale Ale | 4.30 | Not Tried
03 Jul 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Meeting up after work with a friend who is briefly in London – I let him pick the venue, so it’s a quick revisit to this busy brewpub.

I was in danger of melting by just walking here from Temple station, so pleased to note that it was cooler in than out. I ran in to Colin G here, who I have not seen since Sunday – amazing how much news we had to exchange after just three days.
Essex Street - Grumpy Scot Very Pale Ale | 4.30 | | Pale gold and hoppy. |
Essex Street - Smoke House | 4.20 | | A dark brown Porter. Very smoky. |
Redemption - Rock the Kazbek | 4.00 | Not Tried
Essex Street - Tempale Best Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried
Essex Street - Calcutta Club India Pale Ale | 5.50 | Not Tried
13 May 2015 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening. Unusual to find somewhere with this industrial chic decor style so near the heart of the City. Sad to see Adnams Southwold Bitter on keg - cask and keg beers should never have the same name as this is brand dilution and misleading to the unwary.
Essex Street - The Gavel American Pale Ale | 4.30 | | Well balanced with creamy mouthfeel |
Sambrook's - Wandle | 3.80 | Not Tried
Essex Street - Red Keg Malty Ale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Essex Street - Temple Brown Ale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Essex Street - Citra P.A. (was 4.5%) | 4.60 | Not Tried
