Landlord's Friend - Mr Cuddles4.00GoodThe perfect antidote to very hoppy beers, this is the opposite, pale but very malty with a sweetish biscuity character. Little hop character, with a malty finish. Still no crystal malt though. My score 15/20.
Little Ale Cart - Steel City Crystal Malt Just Say No4.00AcceptableVery pale and hoppy with a dry citrus hop character. Slight hint of fruitiness in the finish. My score 14/20.
Little Ale Cart - Steel City CTZ Mid Atlantic Pale Ale4.00AcceptableVery pale and rather hazy probably due to the sheer amount of hop oils! Pungent citrus hoppiness prevails leading to a very dry and astringent hoppy finish. My score 13/20.
Hopping Mad - Fruitcase4.50AcceptableVery bitter amber beer. Hop bitterness carries through to the finish. My score 13/20.

Wentworth - Vanilla Stout4.30ExcellentSweet black stout with a good vanilla flavour. Balance is provided by roast malt, leading to a dryish, roasty finish. My score 16/20.

BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - Hophead Citra3.80ExcellentProbably the best beer to showcase this pungent, aromatic citrus lemon hop so far. Packed full of juicy citrus flavours with a good dose of malt for balance. Far better than the dry citrus taste of standard Hophead. The finish is long and refreshing citrussy hoppiness. My score 17/20.
Ulverston - Fra Diavolo4.30GoodA dark brown porter style beer with a bittersweet malty character and a little hoppiness in the finish. My score 15/20.
Castle Rock - George Green4.20AcceptableRuby/brown darker bitter with bitter hop flavours and just a hint of malt. Dry, bitter finish. My score 14/20.

Good buzz in here this evening with a regular's birthday celebrations.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crouch Vale - House Dragon4.50GoodBirthday special brewery mix made with Brewers Gold and Amarillo and dry hopped. Gives a smooth and rounded hoppy beer. My score 15/20.
Art Brew - Frank's Last Stand5.80GoodA malty dark strong bitter. Plenty of malt flavour with caramel and toffee notes and some hop in the dryish finish. My score 15/20.
Harvey's - Ration Ale2.70AcceptableProbably the most bitter Harvey's beer I have drunk. Rather thin with no real body to back up the bitterness. My score 14/20.
Toad - Dark Side of the Toad4.10AcceptableReddish and quite bitter with a rather thin unbalanced flavour. Some hop in the finish. My score 13/20.

BeerABVScoreNotes
Red Fox - Fennec Fox4.50ExcellentDark amber coloured bitter bursting with hoppiness. The pungent aroma of cat's pee and huge citrus flavour was identified as Simcoe hops. Lingering citrus aftertaste. Very refreshing and flavoursome, my score 16/20.

BeerABVScoreNotes
Thwaites - Crowning Touch4.30GoodRuby colored bitter with mainly sweet malt flavours with just a hint of hoppiness in the finish. My score 15/20.
Brontë - Wuthering Heights3.70AcceptableAmber beer with bitterness derived from malt rather than hops. Not really to my taste. My score 13/20.

BeerABVScoreNotes
RedWillow - Headless3.90GoodA malty golden bitter with biscuity malt and some dry hoppiness in the finish. My score 15/20.
Rooster's - Juniper IPA5.00GoodStrong hoppy amber bitter with good fruity, citrus hop character. Dry hoppy finish. My score 15/20.
Brontë - Branwell4.00AcceptableGolden ale with a rather thin body and lacking in much hop or malt flavour. My score 12/20.
01 Feb 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Quite busy for a Tuesday with the usual mix of locals and beer samplers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Acorn - Apollo IPA5.00GoodPale and hoppy dark golden IPA. Very good hop character and good citrus notes. A little malt balance gives a full bodied flavour. My score 15/20.
Mighty Oak - Alpha Romeo4.30GoodWell balanced darker bitter, quite bitter with a fruity finish. My score 15/20.

Mighty Oak - Winter Blonde4.00ExcellentVery pale ale with very good citrus hop character balanced by biscuity malt. Lingering, clean finish. My score 17/20.
Hereford - Winter's Ale4.50PoorAmber bitter with little hop character to speak of. A hint of maltiness is not enough to rescue the flavour of this beer. My score 9/20.

BeerABVScoreNotes
Rebellion - Mild3.50ExcellentExcellent sample of this dark red/brown mild with sweet bicuity malt and toffee flavours dominating leading to a slightly fruity finish. My score 17/20.

The pub is found in Hoxton, Central London, N1 7TA.

Re-opened Monday 3rd June 2013 after a period of closure for major refurbishment. The corner double door entrance is now open with floor tiles entrance "mat" renovated - these doors carry published opening times, previously always very "flexible". Is now a Ground Floor and Basement operation only as the upper floors are being converted to residential use. 2 very fine large Wenlock Brewery mirrors adorn the walls. 10 handpumps on the front of original horseshoe bar counter in two side-by-side banks of 5. The 2 lighted statues from top of bar overhead have migrated to either end of the mantelpiece over the open fire. A row of 10 keg taps have been introduced. Gents toilet with 2 urinals at Ground Floor level in left hand corner. New stairs customer access to basement for 2 Ladies toilets and a Gents sit-down. The backless piano has been retained but moved from the right hand corner to the left hand corner. Mini boxes of cider for sale at the back of the right hand leg of the bar counter. The pub is now operated by Moontide which offers a 10% discount on real ales for card carrying CAMRA members. HISTORICAL INFORMATION : For a long time THE real ale house in North London. For years run by guvnors Wills and Steve. A battle royale was on in 2012 to save the pub from the developers into whose hands it had fallen. The local council provided some protection but the battle continued. As at November 2012 yet another revised planning application was made to convert the floors above the pub into accommodation leaving the pub to run as a ground floor and basement operation only. Watch this space! Closed for major refurbishment of the ground floor after business on Sunday 3rd March 2013 with opening planned for, perhaps, late April or May 2013. Planning application to convert upper floors to flats was approved by the local Council sometime in early 2013 meaning loss of the first floor facilities - principally the function room. 2017 North London CAMRA branch Pub of the Year.

We have visited this pub 219 times, seen 757 different beers and tried 655 of them.
