09 Apr 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Just about sunny and warm enough to sit outside. Oddly quiet for this pub. Nevertheless a pleasant couple of hours.
Wood's - Parish Bitter | 4.00 | | Have had this on better form when I would have rated it as excellent, but you can't knock down a coconut every time. A nice malty, medium bitter session ale. |
Conwy (Bragdy Conwy) - Rampart | 4.50 | | Something for everybody, good malt and nicely hopped etc. etc. but nothing spectacular. Good balance and fair body. Superbly kept and presented. |
Derby - Hop till you drop | 3.90 | | Doesn't quite live up to its name, but a decent bitter. |
06 Apr 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Very pleasant couple of hours, nice people both sides of the bar and a great range of beers.
Ascot - Penguin Porter | 4.50 | | This is a porter with style, all the expected flavours in good balance along with reasonable body and also light and easy to drink. Very pleasant. |
Rowton - Rowton Bitter | 3.90 | | A malty bitter, odd in as much as the bitterness bites through the initial maltiness before the malt has had time to finish. A good bitter ale. |
WharfeBank - Tether Blond | 4.10 | | Not overpowering in any of the good, earthy flavours available. Good session ale? |
25 Mar 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Super to sit in the glorious spring sunshine drinking excellent ales. Lots of like minded people.
Rat - White Rat | 4.00 | | Superb, full bodied pale / bitter ale. Absolutely packed full of nice malt and citrus / hoppy flavours. Top notch. |
Wye Valley - HPA (Hereford Pale Ale) | 4.00 | | What a superb pale ale, normally this would be excellent if not exceptional. This time though, I got a lemony citrus ending which detracted from the good work that had gone before. Still good. |
Offbeat - Oddball Red | 4.80 | | Peppery and spicy, golden ale. Good body and balance. |
11 Mar 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Wonderful Spring sunshine - an afternoon in the beer garden - great.
Phoenix - Navvy | 3.80 | | Full of flavour but a little confusing. Probably not helped by the beer I have just had. Will have to try again. |
Facer's - Landslide 1927 | 4.90 | | Pleasant until you get hit by the lemon. Strong shandy comes to mind! |
RedWillow - Headless | 3.90 | | A nice clean pint, good malt and some pleasant hops on the end. Decent. |
27 Feb 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Six great ales on show this evening. I wish I had the time and the capacity to try them all. Busy and friendly as always.
Exit 33 (formerly The Brew Company then Sky's Edge) - Hop Ripper IPA | 4.30 | | A delicate, sweet and malty start and if you wait long enough along comes a satisfying and lasting bitterness. |
Ludlow - Gold | 4.20 | | A pleasure to try an ale where the malt isn't batterred into submission by the hops. The maltiness lasts all the way through the hoppy bitterness. Good structure and balance. |
Offbeat - Outlandish Pale | 3.90 | | Crackingly good pale bitter. Can't elaborate too much because my taste buds have been molested by a previous pint. |
18 Feb 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Lots of CAMRA people still milling around; all three rooms were very busy. Nevertheless, good conversation, super staff and great beer.
Purple Moose - Glaslyn Ale | 4.20 | | Not quite as complex as I remember, nevertheless a good bitter. Lovely malt, a little fruit and a nice hoppy, medium bitter finish, also quite crisp and clean. All in good balance and with a good body. |
RedWillow - Feckless | 4.10 | | I think this is what has become known as a classic English bitter. Medium malt and a lasting hoppy finish. Jolly nice. |
Frodsham - Dark Ark Ale | 4.00 | | Not particularly dark and seems to be a bit confused. A mid malty start and some fruit leading to a muddled finish. Not sure what to make of this other than it was a decent drink. |
12 Feb 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Not quite as busy as Friday - but not bad for Sunday afternoon in winter. Cold outside, plenty of warmth inside.
Merlin - Merlin's Gold | 3.80 | | A light malty start and a medium bitter finish. |
Fuzzy Duck - Mucky Duck | 4.00 | | About as black as black can be. Black coffee, dark chocolate and burnt nuts all give a pleasant unfussy dark ale. |
Great Orme - Merlyn | 5.00 | | Buttery and bittery just about says it all. |
10 Feb 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Absolutely heaving - and deservedly so. Congratulations to all concerned at the Bridge End Inn - CAMRA Pub of the Year 2012. A pleasure to have such a wonderful pub on my doorstep. If you get a chance, make a visit, you will not be disappointed. WELL DONE!!
McGivern Ales - Snowflake | 4.30 | | Good malty start and a dry bitter finish in good balance. There was something else in there that I couldn't put my finger on, not unpleasant I hasten to add. Not far from being a great ale. |
Wincle - Sir Philip | 4.20 | | A lightly malted, amber, medium bitter. Jolly nice. |
McGivern Ales - Amber Ale | 4.20 | | Not for me on this occasion, overly malty and overly dry in the finish. Others obviously enjoying it, judging by the amount being served. |
04 Feb 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
A fleeting visit this evening, great beers, great staff and great locals.
Cairngorm - Trade Winds | 4.30 | | My first attempt at a beer from this brewery and pleasantly surprised. Buttery, lemony, elderflowery, malty and bittery. Jolly nice. |
Dunham Massey - Big Tree Bitter | 3.90 | | A classic; light malty start leading to a balanced medium bitter finish. |
Great Orme - Orme Best | 4.20 | | A darker beer with a very odd opening, some vanilla and something else (oddly nice), all leading to a pleasant bitterness. All's well that ends well! |
30 Jan 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Such a popular pub and not without good reason. Warm and welcoming on both sides of the bar and always an eclectic selection of well kept ales. Pleasant couple of hours.
Ossett - Snow Drop | 4.20 | | A very pale, hopyy bitter. Sharp, clean and fresh. Well kept and presented, as are all beers at this hostelry. |
Rat - Brown Rat | 3.80 | | Nice to see this style of beer on draught, and it was a good example. It was a typical brown ale with a little malt and some fruit and hops in good balance. Smooth and easy to drink. |
Facer's - North Star Porter | 4.00 | | Usual selection of dark flavours in good balance. Smooth and not overpowering. |
