A very pleasant couple of hours,
Slater's - Supreme | 4.70 | | A deep golden ale with good body. I'm not sure why this beer was so good, there were no noticeably outstanding flavours. Whilst drinking this, I considered the presentation - well kept, perfect temperature, proper measure and served by a friendly person behind the bar. Back to the beer - it was three pints good. |
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Dark Knight | 4.80 | | Nice dark chocolate and burnt nuts / caramel leading to a dryish finish. My only criticism would be a sligjtly thin body, otherwise excellent. |

Always a friendly welcome and always a great selection of ales. I've said it before and I'll say it again "what a super place to spend a couple of hours, friendly people, good ales and a proper British pub".
Wood's - Parish Bitter | 4.00 | | A superb malty bitter. Nothing pretentious, just a jolly good session ale. Always consistent and never disappoints. |
Purple Moose - Snowdonia Ale (Cwrw Eryri) | 3.60 | | Superb. Lovely malts and a dry hoppy finish all in good balance. |
Joule's - Slumbering Monk | 4.50 | | Really not sure about this, I changed my mind several times whilst drinking it. Sweet, smooth and malty with a dry hoppy finish. A little thin on body for me and I wouldn't spend a night on it but well worth a try. |

Always a pleasant welcome from locals and staff.
Peerless - Triple Blond | 4.20 | | A blonde ale with a lasting white head. Good body, yet still light and a refreshingly medium dry bitter finish. |
Peerless - Crystal Maze | 4.40 | | Deep golden ale with a medium body, medium malty, medium nutty bitter taste. |
Peerless - Paxtons Peculiar | 4.10 | | For me, this was peculiar! Lacking in beer / alcohol related taste. Will try again at earliest opportunity. |
12 Jan 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Very, very busy.
Sandstone - Poachers Ale | 4.50 | | The Sandstone website shows this at 4.4% but the pump clip has it at 4.5%. An amber ale with a noticeably crusty head. No outstanding malty flavours and a medium bitterness. A pleasant middle of the road ale. |
Sandstone - Obsidian | 5.00 | | As the name suggests, a dark ale but not a porter or a stout, this was a quality dark ale. Despite nicely proportioned fruit, chocolate and treacle, it was light and smooth to drink. |

Nice people both sides of the bat. Great selection of beers. Not too busy.
McGivern Ales - Snowflake | 4.30 | | Best McGivern's ale to date (in my opinion). A true pale ale - a semi sweet biscuity malt giving way to a nicely balanced, medium dry, hoppy finish. Nice one. |
Weetwood - Cheshire Cat | 4.00 | | Light amber in colour. Nicely proportioned malty start leading to a balanced, lasting, fruity hop finish. |
02 Jan 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Extremely busy, quietening down a little after 17:00. Always a nice welcome from locals and staff.
Weetwood - Eastgate Ale | 4.20 | | A middle of the road ale and I got a bit of all sorts, some malt and some fruit and unexpectedly some licquorice, followed with a nicely rounded semi bitterness. Fair body, fair balance and reasonably smooth. |
McGivern Ales - Amber Ale | 4.20 | | Dry toast followed with a medium / dry, medium bitter finish. |
Llangollen - Bitter | 4.20 | | Overwhelmingly malty with a slightly dry, light bitter finish. Uninspiring. |
21 Dec 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Busy at early doors. Nice people both sides of the bar.
Salopian - Labyrinth | 4.50 | | A dark ale with dark malts and hops in good balance, hints of fruit. Smooth to drink. |
Yard of Ale - Amber Gambler | 4.00 | | Amber coloured ale, biscuity malt and a fairly dry finish. |
13 Dec 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Lots of friendly people to talk to. Excellent range of well kept beers.
Weetwood - Best Bitter | 3.80 | | I think my perception of bitter is different to others. I would say this was a beautifully balanced medium bitter. Very smooth and a taste I couldn't put my finger on. Whatever it was, it was really good. |
Oakham - Citra | 4.20 | | I have this at 4.2%. Bordering on exceptional and, I hate to admit it, but this was better than Bishop's Farewell!!! Similar in taste but more fragrant and floral and a little less harsh. Wow!!! |

What a great pub. Entertainment on a Sunday afternoon! OK the Shadows and Beatles aren't my 'cup of tea' but the pub was busy and lots of people were enjoying the music, the atmosphere and most importantly, the great beer.
Stonehouse - Station Bitter | 3.90 | | Judging by the number of venues this ale can be found, it must be the most popular ale from the Stonehouse portfolio. It is a beautiful golden, malty, half bitter, session ale. Always consistent, at worst - good, at best - excellent |
Phoenix - Thirsty Moon | 4.60 | | A golden coloured, fruity, malty ale. Good body and balance, my only criticism would be a slightness, and I mean only a slightness. of acidity. Well kept and presented. |
Purple Moose - Madog's Ale | 3.70 | | A darker ale with an immediate taste of walnuts and a little vanilla. Noticeably smooth and easy to drink - 'gone in 30 seconds' or in my case - ten minutes |

Not a visit but praise where praise is due! Well done to the staff here for banging your drum on Pubsandbeer. I'd forgotten this was in the last 16 for poty, and now, as mentioned by the staff, it is in the last 4? Well done. The other 3 pubs are the Engineers Arms, Henlow, Beds, the Swan with Two Necks, Pendleton, Lancs, and the Front, Falmouth, Cornwall, this last one being the only other listed on Pubsandbeer. They all sound very good in the gbg write up's. Good luck to them all.
