Very busy Saturday afternoon / early evening. Continuously changing beers served to perfection.
McGivern Ales - Code Breaker | 4.40 | | This brewery seems to have got its act together since its move last year. A stunning hazel nut flavoured beer with a nicely balanced sweetness. |
Two Roses - Chinook | 4.00 | | Malt and hoppy bitterness in good balance. a quality bitter. |
Oxfordshire Ales - Blenheim | 4.20 | | There was something quirky about this semi dry bitter beer. Couldn't quite put my finger on it but it was a very decent drink. |
19 Jul 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Busy in the main bar and quiet in the other room (not sure what to call it). superb range of well kept beers, as always.
Rowton - Starlight | 3.60 | | Crackingly good malty bitter. So much taste and this was after a much stronger pint. Should have had this first. |
Weetwood - Old Dog Premium Bitter | 4.50 | | Excellent, middle of the road, malty beer. |
Boggart - Rum Porter | 4.60 | | Porter style with an overwhelming taste of rum and raisin ice cream. |
Blue Bee - Nectar Pale | 4.00 | | Pale, hoppy and fairly dry. |
13 Jul 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Very busy Friday early evening, great to see a pub this busy at this time of day. A quick mention on the excellent condition of each and every pint served at this pub - and the comparatively reasonable price still at £2.60.
Hypnos - Crocodile Tears | 8.00 | | Rich, golden and fruity, nicely balanced maltiness, good body and a bit of a kick at the end. |
Sandstone - Opal | 4.20 | | A quality malty bitter with delicate floral overtones which improved as the pint went down. Very pleasant. |
Inveralmond - Ossian's Ale | 4.10 | | First time I have tried a pint from this brewery. Tea and tinny tastes which seemed to compliment each other and not detract from the overall effect. Enjoyable. |

Wonderfully peaceful early evening, relax and forget the trials of the day with some great beer.
Slater's - Original | 4.00 | | Packed with taste, all of which are well balanced and satisfying. Not a full bitter in my opinion but a classic English ale. Presented and served in the peak of condition. |
Rat - White Rat | 4.00 | | As good as ever. A malty, full bitter in perfect balance. It seems that many others like it too, judgimng by the number of pints being served. |
Dunham Massey - Obelisk | 3.90 | | I do not think it would be fair to make a judgement on this beer as it was my third pint after two quite strong tasting beers. It was quite light and obviously not too bitter. I look forward to trying this again. |

Wonderful to have a peaceful pint and reflect the events of the last week. Ales are served and presented in supreme condition.
Salopian - Lemon Dream | 4.50 | | Beautifully malty and bitter in good balance, surprisingly not too citrussy. Absolutely crystal clear, golden and superb. |
Phoenix - Hopsack | 3.80 | | A little one dimensional, hoppy bitter and not much else but pleasant enough. |
McGivern Ales - Gold | 4.30 | | Lots of good tastes in this golden bitter. Nutty, malty, hoppy and a medium dry bitter finish. Best McGivern ale to date. |
20 May 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Unusually quiet for a Sunday afternoon.
Salopian - Divine Comedy | 3.90 | | A wonderful dark, fruity, citrussy bitter. |
Woodlands - Old Faithful | 3.60 | | Initially I wasn't too sure but this was a rather pleasing medium dry bitter with good malt, hops and fruit. It grows on you. |
Phoenix - White Tornado | 4.30 | | Neither one thing or the other, was it meant to be a classic pale ale or a citrussy bitter? Tastes weren't balanced. |
04 May 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Pleasant couple of hours.
Northumberland - Strawberry Blonde | 4.00 | | Fairly malty but not overpowering, unfortunately there wasn't a lot of anything else coming through. |
Sandstone - Edge | 3.80 | | A fairly dry bitter with lemon overtones. |
Tatton - Blonde | 4.00 | | A bit fruity and a little hoppy but nothing to make a fuss about. |
26 Apr 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Very pleasant couple of early evening hours with a good book and plenty of ales to choose from. Usual first class, friendly service.
Phoenix - Arizona | 4.10 | | A tangy beer with a medium dry finish - difficult to describe a genre for this ale. Certainly pale but not what I would describe as bitter? Anyway, very nice and seemingly everybody's favourite tonight. |
Epicurus Craft Beer (formerly Hornbeam) - Black Coral Stout | 4.50 | | A good classic stout, creamy and dark with a burnt, nutty, bitterness at the end. Perhaps a little thin on body. |
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Constantine | 4.30 | | Malty with hints of other flavours, shame the other flavours weren't more forthcoming. Still good. |
20 Apr 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
A quiet early evening with a good book and good beers.
Titanic - Stout | 4.50 | | One of the nicest beers of this genre that I have tasted. Fruity, nutty and dark, without the acidic harshness that I usually associate with this style. |
Titanic - Centenary | 4.50 | | Had this beer last night but never noticed the rather pleasant bouquet, or pleasant for a beer anyway. The tastes weren't as pronounced as last night, but that's probably due to the ales I have had so far. |
Rat - White Rat | 4.00 | | Bordering on exceptional, a supreme citrus / hoppy, bitter / pale ale. Exquisite. |
19 Apr 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Peaceful night, in a quiet room, in a pub with seven crackingly good ales.
Titanic - Centenary | 4.50 | | Superb pale bitter. Fragrant malty start and a smokey, dry bitter finish. Good balance and good body - a premium ale. |
Black Hole - Red Dwarf | 4.50 | | I have tasted so many beers that are similar to this lately, I am tempted to say a 'run of the mill' chestnut ale. That may sound derogatory, but there was nothing untoward abd nothing spectacular. Still, a decent pint. |
Salopian - Blackwater Bull's Eye | 4.10 | | A decent spicey bitter |
