29 Sep 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Usual great range of ales. Pleasant staff and locals, pleasant pub.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Merlin - The Wizard4.20ExcellentExcellent first time I tried this and even better this time. An abundance of flavours all perfectly balanced and with decent body. Earthy malt, citrus and hops with delicate floral overtones. Golden, crystal clear and delicious.
Lancaster - Amber3.70GoodA medium dry, medium bitter beer. One of those beers with a distinctive flavour that you can't quite establish. Definitely a fruit of some sort, possibly grape? Decent beer.
Rat - Desert Rat4.00GoodA golden bitter, citrus and hops in abundance and even a little malt at the start. a lingering bitter aftertaste.
27 Sep 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Unusually quiet early evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Constantine4.30GoodMalty bitter, getting lots of berry flavours coming through which I don't remember from last time I had this. Bit thin on body.
Brentwood - Spooky Moon3.80AcceptableA medium dry uninspiring bitter.
Rat - Black Rat Porter4.50AcceptableLooked the business but the usual porter tastes were weak and shallow. Very smooth to drink and well presented.
Offbeat - Unhinged Ginger4.50AcceptableSlightly hazy, ginger aroma with a spicy ginger start and warm spicy ginger aftertaste, the bit in the middle spoilt the overall effect - it was watery and thin on body. If you have this, make it your last as it will tinge the taste of anything following.
22 Sep 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Extremely busy, unfortunately one or two clowns amongst the throng.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Purple Moose - Madog's Ale3.70ExcellentLots and lots of good flavours to savour. Better than many much stronger ales, in my opinion.
Salopian - Lemon Dream4.50GoodA good bitter, not as citrussy or lemony as one would expect and perhaps a little one dimensional, still very good.
Conwy (Bragdy Conwy) - Rampart4.50GoodGood beer of its type, good balance, fair body and well presented. My only problem was that a following beer was similar in taste with an all round better feel and almost 1% weaker. Nevertheless a decent beer.
15 Sep 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
A bustling late Saturday afternoon / early evening. Wonderful to see a thriving real ale pub - long may it continue.
BeerABVScoreNotes
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Yorkshire Terrier4.20GoodA large creamy head and a pleasant malty half bitter lurking beneath.
Brimstage - Trapper's Hat3.80GoodTwice in one week and as good as the first. Nice malt and pleasant hops with good body and plenty of taste at 3.8%.
Harwich Town - Ganges4.00GoodA darker beer than I would normally go for (dark gold / dark amber), but after my first pleasing effort with this brewery, I was tempted to try a second beer. A decent all round beer - nothing exceptional and nothing to moan about. Middle of the road and very drinkable.
10 Sep 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Wonderfully quiet early Monday evening. A good book and a good pint, what more could I ask for?
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brimstage - Trapper's Hat3.80ExcellentA good malty, bitter / sweet ale. All flavours in excellent balance, good body and easy to drink.
Harwich Town - EPA3.80ExcellentI know this isn't brewers terminology but this was blue cheese (probably Stilton) in a glass with a lasting bitter aftertaste. Wonderful!
Brimstage - Scarecrow4.20Excellenta nutty, malty and hoppy ale. Good flavours, balance and body.
07 Sep 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Beautiful early evening sunshine in a pleasant beer garden, add to great beers and good service. Utopia.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Salopian - Oracle4.00ExcellentClassy. One of the best citrus bitters, tasty malts also in there. Good balance and body.
Hobsons - Twisted Spire3.50GoodEasy drinking session ale. Light on malt and a reasonable bitterness does eventually come through.
Dunham Massey - Deer Beer4.50GoodA chestnut coloured beer, fruity and very slightly dry. Not my style but easy to understand why it is popular.
02 Sep 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
A relatively quiet Sunday afternoon. Managed to catch some late summer sun in the beer garden.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Adnams - Ghost Ship4.50GoodIt was OK but in all honesty I was disappointed. I know we are a long way away from Suffolk but I still expected more from this top brewery. My initial reaction was a bit watery for 4.5% and then a delicate malty and hoppy flavour leading to a vague peppery finish.
McGivern Ales - Code Breaker4.40GoodI'm not sure whether these ales are available away from the brewery tap and beer festivals, they really are worth looking out for. A nutty and fruity sweet, medium dry ale. Very pleasant.
Weetwood - Mad Hatter3.90AcceptableA copper brown, malty ale with some acid crispness. A bit light on body.
31 Aug 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Busy early evening, usual good quality of service and beers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Liverpool Organic - Liverpool Pale Ale4.00ExcellentHow pleased I was to see this top bitter beer on the bar. Full of flavour, crisp and fresh.
Brecon - Twilight Beacons4.00ExcellentLots of good flavours in good balance. Smokey, nutty, malty and fruity all in a glass. Crackingly good dark ale.
McGivern Ales - Decipher4.70GoodNow brewing some super ales, this brewery is fast becoming a must when visiting the Bridge End. This was an all rounder. A light coloured medium ale, very pleasant.
28 Aug 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Unfortunately missed a great beer festival over the bank holiday. Early Tuesday evening and I think everybody must have been recovering from the festivities, this was the quietest I have ever seen this pub. Nevertheless, great beer and service as usual.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Worsthorne - Old Trout4.50AcceptableMalty, nutty and dry. Not bad characteristics , but these were not balanced. A bitter finish helped it along a little. Not for me.
Salopian - Kashmir5.50AcceptableSalopian's August monthly brew seemed a little confused, I got some citrus and tropical fruit and not much else. Disappointing at 5.5% - will have to try again when the opportunity arises.
4T's - Hale 4 The Pint4.00AcceptablePale and medium bitter, nothing else coming through.
12 Aug 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Balmy late Sunday afternoon in the beer garden. Superb range of beers in glorious condition served by pleasant, friendly staff.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Merlin - The Wizard4.20ExcellentNo nonsense, full on bitter with a lingering bitter aftertaste. Superb.
Black Iris - Peregrine Pale4.60GoodA golden ale with a smokey malt in balance with an aromatic bitterness. A little different to the norm - great!
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Red Hot4.10GoodNicely crafted, delicate sweet malt in good balance with a nice semi dry bitterness. Beautiful golden ale.
