17 Nov 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Good selecion of quality ales and still around the £2.60p mark.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Rat - White Rat4.00ExceptionalThis has to be one of the best beers of its type. Consistently excellent and every mouthfull is as fresh and tasty as the one before.
Dunham Massey - Big Tree Bitter3.90GoodNice earthy malt to start, balanced with a medium bitter finish.
Salopian - Darwin's Origin4.30GoodHad this at other venues but it has never been this good. A complex ale with good malt and plenty of hoppy / citrus fruit.
Salopian - Peccadillo4.80GoodTypically Salopian, great malt and plenty of citrus fruit. Good body and balance.
12 Nov 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Quiet early Monday evening. Good range of beers and pleasant staff, as always.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Bristol Beer Factory - Acer3.80ExcellentSlightly hazy, lots of intense flavours and a lasting, dry, bitter finish.
B&T (Banks & Taylor's) - Shefford Bitter3.80AcceptableFlattered to deceive, nice looking beer in the glass, crystal clear and fresh - very ordinary, middle of the road, medium bitter.
McGivern Ales - Matt Black4.50AcceptableJet black in colour - a smooth stout style ale, a bit light on flavour and body.
10 Nov 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
An evening with good natured Hereford United supporters. Such fun.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Monty's - Sunshine4.20ExcellentGot so much more flavour from this than I ever have before. Nutty, malty sweetness with a medium dry, lasting bitter finish, complex and well balanced.
George Wright - Longboat4.00GoodLightweight bitter with a medium dry finish.
Prescott - Hill Climb3.80GoodNo nonsense, well hopped, pale bitter.
05 Nov 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Busy Monday evening. Excellent array of ales and pleasant staff serving them. Sat in the quiet room and read through a copy of Norfolk Nips (Norfolk CAMRA) magazine.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Slater's - Premium4.40GoodLots of caramel and fruit, good hoppiness and a balanced malty finish. Good body.
Lancaster - Blonde4.00GoodStrong aroma of newly mown grass which transferred to a leafy, green taste (if that makes sense), nice malts and a dry hoppy finish. A complex beer which held together well, good balance and a well complimented light body.
Blackjack - Honey Trap4.50GoodDidn't get too much honey, but this was a very good blonde bitter. Super malt and hops.
Derby - Spookylicious4.30GoodPresumably a seasonal, Halloween brew. A ruby beer with tastes reminiscent of something much darker and heavier. All of those tastes but light and flavoursome.
03 Nov 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
A very busy Saturday evening, lots of happy people.
BeerABVScoreNotes
RedWillow - Headless3.90ExcellentA good beer to start the evening. Pleasant malt and hops from start to finish. Great balance and good body.
Weetwood - Eastgate Ale4.20GoodLots going on in the glass. Plenty of fruit and malt along with a fairly dry hoppy finish.
Titanic - Plum Porter4.90GoodThoght I would give this a try at a different venue. No difference in taste, a very plummy, porter style ale.
Phoenix - Skellington4.10GoodA very pale ale brewed for Halloween. A nice floral aroma gave way to lovely malt and hop flavours - whilst in abundance, the flavours were delicate and light. Very nice.
29 Oct 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Usual quality range of beers, good reading, pleasant staff. Brave people still using the duskily lit, getting ever colder beer garden.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Facer's - Flintshire Bitter3.70GoodNice session ale with an initial rush of hazel nuts. Some dryness in the finish.
Salopian - Hop Twister4.50AcceptableSimilar to other beers from this brewery. Citrus fruits coming through in abundance.
Purple Moose - Myrica Gale4.10AcceptableA fragrant tasting, semi sweet, stout style ale. Could have done with a bit more bite and some of those deliciously dark flavours. A lightweight!
25 Oct 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
A pub has control over its staff, its beers, its service etc. etc. Shame it has no way of knowing what's going to walk through the door.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Derby - Business as Usual4.40GoodA deep golden beer. In all honesty, having taken one gulp I was ready to leave this as one for the 'beer tickers'. Then other flavours came forward, yes a bit syrupy but it was also earthy, fruity and delicately hoppy. A bit thin on body, otherwise not bad.
Rooster's - Yankee4.30GoodA decent all round medium bitter, good malts coming through. Crisp and fresh.
Salopian - Black Heart Stout4.30AcceptableBlack in colour, as expected, with a thick, lush, light tan head. An initial rush of plum and fruit petered away to an unexceptional beer of its genre. In my opinion there are better options out there at this abv and price.
20 Oct 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Fairly busy Saturday evening, usual great selection of beers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Tiny Rebel - Cwtch4.60ExcellentBordering on exceptional. A well crafted red ale with a beautiful hoppy bitterness and superb malts coming through. A little dry in the finish. So good I spent the rest of the night on it. Superb.
Lancaster - Black4.50GoodOdd sort of beer, jet black, but not a porter or a stout. Very smooth and slightly sweet, none of the nuttiness and roasted flavours I expected. The last swig reminded me of vanilla ice cream. Odd but nice.
14 Oct 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Wonderful couple of hours relaxation.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Purity - Pure UBU4.50GoodA complex beer, reddish / brown in colour. Slightly acidic , slightly sweet and so much more going on in the glass. For whatever reason, a decent pint.
Brimstage - Oyster Catcher Stout4.40GoodMellowed nutty and coffee flavours, all in good balance, well rounded, smooth and easy to drink.
Brewster's - Hophead3.60AcceptableGolden beer. Citrus and malt flavours were too weak and watery, body was thin. In my opinion, there are far tastier session beers of this genre available.
Great Orme - Orme4.20PoorAccording to the Orme Brewery website, this is a premium Welsh bitter. This must be some odd definition of the word 'bitter' I have yet to come across. A chestnut coloured, thin, sweet beer!
07 Oct 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Fairly quiet Sunday afternoon; good chat with locals and usual top quality ales.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brimstage - Rhode Island Red4.00ExcellentSmooth, well balanced and fruity. Nice malt coming through and slightly dry.
Riverhead - White Cloud4.50ExcellentFull flavoured malty, citrus bitter, unusual toastiness which complimented the flavours. Good balance abd body. A must if you like this style of beer.
