Burnished copper full bodied ale. Rye gave some depth to the malt and let the citrussy character of the hops shine.
Brewster's - American Chopper
4.80
Undistinguished golden ale. Malts seemed thin and unusually for Brewsters, the hops were tired and lacking.
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Whakatu

Might well be made with NZ hops but not many of them. Pale, thin and lacking (in taste).

St Austell - Proper Black

Black premium bitter with excellent smooth mouthfeel. Solid but restrained malts allowed the hops to shine. Long dry finish. Black IPA? No. Great black bitter? Yes.
Shepherd Neame - Fat Head's Yakima Sun

Although it had only been on for 24hrs I found this undrinkable. Strong golden ale which an unpleasant aroma which I couldn't recognise. Flavour initially a good burst of hops but quickly became dry and assertive mid-mouth. I did wonder about taint from the recent cider festival??

Bitter but not a lot else.
Brakspear (at Marston's Wychwood) - Triple

Didn't get this. Almost a blank canvas with little from either hops or malt.
Caledonian - Odell 90/-
5.30
More Caledonian, with that metallic almost cough medicine underlay, then Odell's. But some solid body and drying finish.

Inviting deep gold. Typical Holden's yeast flavour, some toffee and good bitter finish, solid malts.

Gold with white head. Grainy light beer. Some floral hints but also on the tartish side. Would need more from the malts to combat this. OK but not moreish.
The pub is found in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, AB11 5BQ.
Typical Spoon's bank conversion in Castle Street, with typical Spoon's mix of customers but also a manager who knows about real ale and keeps a good variety of beers in good condition. Aberdeen CAMRA Town Pub of the Year 2009.
We have visited this pub 209 times, seen 414 different beers and tried 262 of them.
