Popped in for a crafty pint with Adrian. The side room was busy but the bar was fairly quiet.

Jane and I came here to meet Ian and Martin and to have a pint of Master Brew (...well Jane had a cup of tea). Ah Master Brew... I'd been looking forward to this for ages. Shame it was so lack lustre. I think this pint has cured me of my unexplainable longing for Master Brew.

It was the day after Boxing Day, so there were a fair few people in Canterbury doing the sales shopping thing, and also people still on holiday and the clientele in the pub/hotel reflected that. I like this place very much though. Tastefully redeocrated and a cracking location on the weir.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Porter4.80AcceptableSome chocolate, but a bit powdery, no fruit to speak of and just a bit unintegrated with the flavours.

Here with Ian on a fairly quiet early evening. I like the relaxed feel of this pub and there's plenty of seating.

Busy but it's a fairly big pub so you don't notice. Sat with Ian in the corner and talked about American things.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Late Red4.50GoodThe first 3 or 4 gups of this were excellent but as the pint sank it became a bit lifeless and sickly. Plenty of caramalised malt with, I guess, fuggles as the hop. Well ballanced and good

Here with Andrew. We got the sofa in the conservatory which is my favourite place to sit. Quite poplular in the non smoking restaurant bit. 3 Sheps beers on.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Late Red4.50AcceptableFirst of the season for me of this beer. Attractive brown colour with amber edges and lasting beige head. Served at a good temperature. Malty fruit aroma, bit of dry choc, plums. Fullish in mouth, bit of juicyness. Quite drinkable. I remember it being fruitier and not quite so dry. Especially on end.

I think no. 8 and last on my crawl. When I got out of here I almost crashed my bike into the river so I thought that I should catch the next train home. I was sat in a leather arm chair in the conservatory. It is fast becoming my resident area of choice Comfy with newspapers and the sun. Late afternoon, I was in a good mood and loaded down with booze from the Good's Shed near Canterbury West station. Music is eclectic and sometimes wonderful, Gomez, Eels to Elvis and Johnny Cash.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Porter4.80ExcellentThere may have been other beers on, I guess Master Brew and Spitfire, but I went straight for this. Black beer with brown edges. Roasted malts are good tempered by a yeasty sourness. Quality beer that is just so different from all these bitters. I have fallen in love with these dark sour old ales/beers

They were playing Gomez when I walked in, so I was biased. Took my pint of porter and sat in the leather sofa in the conservatory and had a pleasant hour. Will come back
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Porter4.80ExcellentFruity porter with dark black fruits. Blackcurrant and tangerine. Good porter. Good fruits. Attractive with some soft choc/coffee. Deep brown colour with thin beige lasting head. Good condition.

Corner pub/hotel in Mill Lane near the River Stour. Once the home of Canterbury Brewery, an early Kentish micro-brewery, in the 1980s. Just a tad corporate décor wise. Nice location on the Stour with very attractive buildings around it. Long central bar serves up to 3 hand pulled Shepherd Neame beers. Conservatory and restaurant area around a corner.

We have visited this pub 29 times, seen 12 different beers and tried 10 of them.
