Came in to watch the Man Utd vs Aston Villa Carling Cup Final and to enjoy the fantastic beer selection including one of my favourtie German bottled beers, Augustiner Edelstof Pilsner.
Fox (Leeds) - Wharfebank Camfell Flame | 4.40 | | Amber colour with lasting beige head. Decent biscuit, good malts, good amber ale, seems a popular style now in the UK. Lots of digestive biscuit on finish. Touch of caramel. I love proper amber ales. Sweetish in mouth, good dry biscuit. I love it. Just needs some good hop on the end, but as it is, really drinkable.
|
Phoenix - Porter | 5.10 | | Very very deep ruby colour with lasting tan head. Good toasty roasty porter. Some fruit on aroma. some sulphur in mouth. Roasted, quite harsh porter, but with some lovely blackcurrant fruit. Dry finish with some roasted blackcurrant flavour.
|
Epicurus Craft Beer (formerly Hornbeam) - Voyager | 3.90 | | Gold colour, with a thin white head. Lovely hop on this. Needs a little bit more malt to back it up but good nettle spicy hop. Good |
Fernandes - Wheat | 5.00 | | Clear pale gold colour with lasting thick white head. Some yeast, some citrus on aroma. Perfumed citrus peach/apricot in mouth. Interesting with some esters/apricot mainly though. Good, but not my flavours.

I got a last minute invite up to Liverpool from friends and it just so happened to coincide with a German BF here. Oh dear. I sat at the rear raised area enjoying the mix of banter from locals, academics and students.
Titanic - Lookout | 4.40 | | Ever since having the Black Ice I’ve always had a soft spot for this brewery. Mid chestnut in colour, lasting thin dark beige head. Great looking beer. After 3 bottles of German lager, this is great. A malty best bitter, full in mouth and then this burst of hedgerow green earthy hop. So drinkable it’s untrue. Lacing on the glass to die for. The peppery/nettle/green hawthorn leaf hop on the finish is outstanding. It’s just one of the best, best bitter I’ve had. Bursting with malt and red fruits and hedgerow hops. Outstanding. |
Salamander - Serpentine Stout | 4.50 | | Black, thin tan head. Lots of roast on aroma, but lots of blackcurrant too. Really burnt malts the kind of intensity you’d associate with an impy stout. A little watery in the body, but the blackcurrant slightly sour finish over intense dark malts is very impressive |

I had an hour to kill before catching the train from Liverpool Lime Street to meet my friends so got some "nips" in here. Not too busy on a mid Friday afternoon, but still a great range of UK micros and world beers.
Weetwood - Oast-House Gold | 5.00 | | It's gold, obviously with a thin beige head. A strong golden beer in the Summer Lightning vane. In fact if you gave me this and said it was Summer Lightning I'd believe you. Some yeast on armoa, a bit sweet in mouth. Drying citrus hop on finish. |
Hadrian and Border - Legion Ale | 4.20 | | Copper thin beige head. Malty, toffee bitter with plenty of earthy hop that builds on the finish. Not normally my kind of beer, but it's fine. |
Cottage - Paws | 4.90 | | Dark brown, bit of sour liquorice on aroma. Not my kind of beer at all. Bit of diacetyl maybe too. Some roasty malt. Not my kinda beer, sorry. |
Hydes - Bells & Whistles | 4.10 | | Gold, thin white head. Some toffee in this. Quite drinkable, some puckering dryness on finish. Not as yeasty as some Hyde's I've had. Fine. |

I had no idea what time this pub opened on a Saturday, so I spent half an hour staring at it from St George's gardens when I could have been in it drinking. Never mind, I had 2 rounds of cellar runs of 4 beers each and then took a couple to drink on the train in plastic bottles. I sat next to a table of Tranmere Rovers fans having a drink before the game and then a local group of Camra members. Cracking.
Salamander - Stout | 4.50 | | Black with dark brown edges. Watery, hoppy stout. Yes, some roasted malts, yes a little sourness from some dark fruit. Tasty and a little different to the dry roasted stouts. This is more sour. |
Saltaire - Blackberry Cascade | 4.80 | | Orange/gold with thin beige head. Dusty/blackberry aroma. Acidic blackberry in mouth, juicy sharp blackberry on finish. Does exactly what it says on the tin. Very tasty and I love the fruit. |
Bradfield - Ye Olde English | 4.60 | | Reddish copper colour. Quite a perfumed aroma. That’s a pretty tasty perfumed bitter. Decent hop, bit of white pepper. Good and tasty. |
Fernandes - Louise IPA | 4.50 | | Gold, nicely hoppy beer. Hop is mostly English I guess, EKG maybe. Hops are good, quite aggressive on finish. No great depth, bit grapey/grapefruit on flavour. |
Bradfield - Who's the Daddy? | 4.30 | | Disturbing clear deep red colour. It’s a fruity bitter, some raspberry, but it could be because it’s read. But I have to say, yes, raspberry, a bit pippy. Decent bitter malts to be honest and very drying hop. A bit bizarre, cos of the colour, but you know what? This is ok. Fruit does give it a lift. |
Bradfield - True Blue | 4.30 | | Pale gold with thin off white head. Hop is quite sherberty and quite tasty. Bit of peach. Some fruit. Fine. Bit dusty on the finish. |
Cottage - Cutty Sark | 4.50 | | Chestnut colour with lasting beige head. Best bitter aroma. Toasty aroma, decent malts, some fruit. Bit of dryness on end. It’s an ok best bitter, some good character. Reasonably good malts |
Holden's - Night Train | 4.30 | | Gold with thin beige head. Fairly bland bitter. OK hop. Could be anything frankly. Bit watery. Good condition. Hop is relatively decent. |
Salamander - St George | 4.40 | | Orange/copper colour. Bit earthy, touch of tangerine/orange fruit. OK. Bit too earthy for me. |
Bryson's Brews - Wammeller's Wheat | 4.00 | | Hazy gold. Bit of yeast on aroma. Farty. Middle has what? Some mid citrus orangey fruit. Finish has some stinging hop. As a wheat beer, it’s poor. Overall not great. |
B&T (Banks & Taylor's) - Eastcote Ale | 4.10 | | Copper with lasting cream head. Bit buttery. Faint hop on finish. Diacetyl, not much, but definitely there, which means that I’m not keen. |
25 Apr 2008 (Ian)
I bumped into a couple of my friends in Dr Duncan's, so we came here and sat upstairs in the wonderful art deco bar in the comfy sofas and chatted about life, the universe and everything. Ended up drinking pints. How I didn't fall over is beyond me.
Abbeydale - Invocation | 4.20 | | Considering there are about a thousand of these blond citrusy hoppy beers about in the UK at the moment, this one is pretty good. Very pale gold, lasting thin white head. Ascetic lemon aroma. Some lemon curd on the swallow. Grapefruit on finish. Not too soapy. Adi, who is a bitter and stout drinker, liked it even though it wasn’t what he would normally drink. |
Hawkshead - Oatmeal Stout | 4.20 | | Decent stout, some cereal. Dryish stout. Good choc/coffee/liquorice. Bit of sourness. Really impressed by all 3 Hawkshead beers at the festival. In fact I ended up having another pint of the Hawkshead Special after this, it was so drinkable. |
Salopian - Jigsaw | 4.80 | | When it said wheat beer on the festival list, I expected a golden one. When the barman poured it, I was a tad suspicious, but looking the beer up, it is described as a "dark wheat beer." Anyway my friend Adi said "it tastes like beer." For me I thought that it tasted a bit like a porter/stout with some choc. Compared with German dunkelweizens, this isn’t even close, but it is very drinkable. The wheat gives it a bit more fullness in mouth. The roasted malt doesn’t really come through. A bit like a dark roasty mild but with more mouth feel. Bizarre. |

One of their regular beer festivals. 86 beers on over the course of about 5-6 days, with beers going through the 12 handpulls, a stillage and also available on cellar runs. Here about mid afternoon and then again later in the evening. Friendly staff and good banter with the locals.
Phoenix - Hopsack | 3.80 | | Pale gold. Nettle hop, peppery aroma. I mean really hoppy. Wow. That is the hoppiest 3.8% beer I’ve ever had. 5 mins later I can still taste these green hop flowers on my tongue. Bit of diacetyl on aroma, but just then blown away by the hop. Stings end of tongue. That is amazing. Not sure what hops they used, but there were a lot of them. Not PNW, could be just a lot of an English hop variety. |
Riverhead - Liquorice Stout | 5.00 | | Black, thin light tan head. Roasted malt aroma. Liquorice is there in mouth. More a dry rounded liquorice than sour as I was expecting. Slightly smokey too. Really a rather tasty stout. Lots going on. Very good liquorice, coffee, choc, bit of hop on end. Bitter. Good. |
Hawkshead - Bitter | 3.70 | | Both Hawkshead beers at this fest were good. Gold/copper with thin beige head. Rather a nice floral aroma. Aromatic hops. Now that I like. Good tasty hop on finish is like strawberry sherbert. Tasty bitter. |
Old Bear - Bearly Mild | 3.50 | | Very dark brown with thick beige head. Toasty mild, easy drinking, dryness on finish comes from malt and hops. Easy drinking tasty mild, toast flavour with bit of fruit is lovely. |
Ossett - Revolution IPA | 4.80 | | Pale gold with no head. Rose petal hop aroma. OK in mouth, decent grapefruit, rose petal hop finish. Some sherbert. Hmm. That’s nice and could get better. Hop is promising. |
Fernandes - Yer Ma | 4.10 | | Deep chestnut with disappearing beige head. Decent best bitter, good toffee malts. Some dry malt, little bit nutty. Bit of choc. This was a pretty good best bitter. |
Hawkshead - Special | 3.90 | | Copper with lasting beige head. Looks in good condition. Lovely grapefruit aroma. Classic session bitter. Balanced, good hop inviting you to drink more. Lots of flavour, but nothing out of place. Full in mouth. Cracking beer and the only one I had twice. |
Dent - Frolicking Good Beer | 4.50 | | There seemed to be some confusion as to what this was, but the pump clip definitely said Good Beer not Gold. Pale copper with thin beige head. Decent hoppy bitter with some fruit salad. Drinkable enough. Simple beer with excellent hoppy stinging finish. |
AllGates - Lancashire Pale Ale | 4.50 | | Very pale gold, thin off white head. Not much of a beer really, not much in mouth, some citrusy hop on the finish. Lemony on finish. OK, but could do with more character. |
1648 - Gold Angel | 5.00 | | I come from Kent to Liverpool and have a Sussex beer. Gold, no head. Some fullness from the alcohol. Decent strong beer in the style of Summer Lightning. OK, some stone fruit flavour. Alcohol is a bit obvious. White pepper hop finish. |
Bryson's Brews - Hurricane Bitter | 4.10 | | Gold, no head. It’s an ok golden bitter, not huge on the citrus. Balanced, bit watery in mouth. Hop finish is decent enough. Actually it’s ok, good flavours. Balanced session beer. |
AllGates - Beauty & the Yeast | 4.20 | | Gold, thin beige head. Weird. Distinctive yeasty character. Some fruit. Bit odd. No off aromas or flavours. Smells like a sauvignon blanc from the lower Loire like a Tourraine perhaps. Crazy. |
Kelham Island (probably brewed by Thornbridge now) - Reason to Believe | 4.00 | | Pale gold with thin white head. Fairly bland citrusy beer. Some decent hop on finish. Like 100 other beers of the type. Slightly yeasty aroma. Hops on end are dry and dusty. Some lingering grapefruit. |
Harviestoun - Top Dollar | 4.00 | | Old gold colour with disappearing head. Nettle hop aroma, bit of tea. Tea and nettle finish. Not my favourite combo of flavours, but it does pack a punch with the hops on the end. |
Fernandes - While You're Down There | 3.90 | | Pale gold, no head. Soapy pale gold session beer. Not one of the better ones, but all of it’s ok. Probably the best name of the festival beers and I enjoyed asking the barmaid for it. |
Mordue - The Comb Over | 3.90 | | One of the Charlton’s on the pump clip by the looks of it. Copper, lasting thin beige head. Slightly fruity session bitter. Fine. It’s a bitter. If I had one criticism of this excellent festival is that there are too many 3.6-4.5% bitters/golden ales. |
Black Country - Pig on the Wall Mild | 4.30 | | Chestnut with no head. Not a lot of condition and a bit watery in mouth. Some good red berry jamminess. Syrupy malty aroma. Might be better in better condition. Some rubbery hop on end. End of barrel? |

I do like this pub. Comfy and you can have a good natter about beer with the locals.
Messrs. Maguire - Export Strongest Stout | 5.00 | | Black colour with dark brown edges, thin tan head. Some sweet roasted malt. Some very nice choc. Good finish. Bit of powder, more choc. Bit grainy. Very good stout, well put together. |
Titanic - Shugborough Mi Lady's Fancy | 4.60 | | Gold colour with bubbly white head. Very citrusy hop aroma. Almost sour lemon curd in mouth, some grapefruit. Very hoppy finish. Probably the hoppiest Titanic beer I’ve had. Still got trademark rich malt though. It’s ok, but not exactly subtle. It is a bit lemon curdy. |
20 Mar 2007 (Ian)
I had a long car journey up from Essex and I hadn't really worked out that I was very tired. I kind of collapsed into this pub and after a couple of beers, I was just enormously tired. Anyway, that was my fault. This is still a great pub for its mix of UK and continental beers. Usual mix of beer lovers in.
Tring - Pudding Porter | 4.50 | | Deep ruby/brown colour with lasting thin tan head. Some rich fruit aroma. Good in mouth, more plum type fruit. Crisp hop finish. Bit earthy. Some choc. Fruit in mouth is attractive. Nice, soft fruity porter. |
Wem (formerly Hanby) - Cascade Bitter | 4.50 | | Copper/gold colour with thin beige head. I was expecting this to have lots of Cascade hops. Well it doesn’t. It might have a sprinkling though as it has some earhty citrus hops. These combine with a pleasant golden malty base beer. It’s fine, quite attractive, subtle hop finish. Quite good really as it had to win over my desire for huge Cascade hops. |
Hydes - Vertigo | 4.20 | | Copper/gold colour with lasting thin beige head. Some hop/yeasty aroma. Good in mouth, some depth, good solid pale malts. Good condition, tingly carbonation on tongue. Earthy hop and bit of citrus on finish. Competent bitter. |
Burton Bridge - Perry Power | 4.50 | | Copper colour with lasting beige head. I expected a bit of pear fruit to be honest. Instead this is a pretty standard bitter, some caramel, some hop. Fine, it’s just that it’s a bitter and after an hour or so at this pub, I do get bored of bitters. |
Red Rose - Target | 3.80 | | Pale gold colour with no head. Some faint hop on aroma. Bit of juicy peach fruit in mouth. Bit watery and flat in mouth. Has a bit of tingle on the end. Not a great bitter/golden ale, just dull. |
Station House - Beware the Ides | 4.10 | | Copper/amber colour with thin disappearing beige head. Very buttery/watery bitter. Not a lot of depth. Possible diacetyl as there is a buttery aroma. Some minerally malts, faint fruit (peach, stone fruit) some dryness on finish. Diacetyl is a bit annoying. |
20 Jan 2006 (Ian)
Back in the evening with friends. Still brilliant. Still an excellent range of beers. If anything, the What's Coming board had even more beers on it than when I first arrived 3 days before.
Eastwood & Sanders - 1872 Porter | 6.50 | | Wonderful beer. Deep flavours, incredible aroma of dark malts and some dark fruit. Full and velvety in mouth with long finish. Excellent beer. |
20 Jan 2006 (Ian)
Quick stop here. I had met someone in The Baltic Fleet from Greenwich who wanted to see some Liverpool pubs, so he very kindly gave me a lift here. Time for 2 new Hart beers before heading off to see my God-daughter
Oscars (formerly Hart of Preston) - Mayson Premier | 4.00 | | Dark brown beer with beige head. Good dark beer, got nice burntish toffee. Vry drinkable with nice balancing hop. Pretty good, especially the malts. |
Oscars (formerly Hart of Preston) - (Val)Addiction | 4.80 | | Very dark brown beer with disappearing head Quite oily with liquorice throughout. Quite nice juicy dark malts. Slightly oily but I quite like it. |
