After a short break in my pub crawl on this day (in order to have something to eat and a bath), I headed back out to this little piece of heaven to watch Manchester United vs Burton Albion in the FA Cup replay. I have to admit that being a Man Utd fan in Liverpool is not easy, but hey, the comments are mostly good natured. 5 new beers had appeared since the day before, so I had them all before trying some of the bottles (Witkap Pater, Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier and Silly Saison). Otherwise the beers were the same as the previous day.
Copper Dragon - Golden Pippin | 3.90 | | Pale gold with lasting white head. Nice enough. Hop, bit dusty, but some citrus hop and is a bit nettley. Some acids, lemon, some astringency. Needs a bit more beef. Nice though |
Archers - Dark Mild | 3.40 | | Black with hints of red, lasting bark beige head. Good enough dark mild. Some burnt malt on aroma. Toffeeish choc/coffee in mouth. Finish has continuation of flavour, slightly drying burnt malt. Fine if one dimensional |
Copper Dragon - Challenger IPA | 4.40 | | Copper colour with disappearing white head. OK hop aroma with some pear drop in mouth. Fullish, good citrus and hop finish. Clean enough. Not a classic IPA. Hop finish is nice and bitter |
Station House - Lady o' the Stream | 3.90 | | OK, I give up. I can’t think of anything new to say about this. No offence to this particular beer, but it's a copper coloured slightly hoppy session bitter with some caramel malt in mouth and bitter finish. Fine, Bitter, bitter, bitter. |
Robinsons - Hartleys Cumbria Way | 4.10 | | Copper colour with thin white head. Typical Robinson’s yeasty aroma. Otherwise some pear like fruit, hoppy, earthy finish |

OK, so where do I start? White art deco exterior. Interior is what? Not as good, but I do like the dark red fake leather bench seats. Central bar with 2 main serving area. White boards displaying the available beers have been replaced by boards with printed beeer details, 12 UK micros and 10 continental draught beers) plus a list of what is due to come on. Uses lined pint glasses. Great feel to this pub. A place you can spend hours in and not have the same 2 beers the same. Also serve around 100 beers in bottle too.
Paulaner - Hefeweissbier | 5.30 | | Cloudy orange/gold with thick tight white head. Banana/lemon/touch of bubblegum. Refreshing, very good hefeweiss. Finish has lemon and banana, but it feels light and fluffy. Quite a nice dry feel |
Salopian - Golden Thread | 5.00 | | Worst beer I had at The Mogul in Dover. Its a bit better now. Golden, thin white head. Quite a delightful blonde, summery, citrus, hoppy beer, with a bit of alcool sweetness and a juicy feel. Really nice hoppy aroma. Fruit on the end is excellent |
Oscars (formerly Hart of Preston) - Cartford Special | 4.10 | | Deep brown colour with lasting tight beige head. Some good deep malts. Some coffee and choc. Quite grainy, but a bit more rounded than a stout. Finish has more roasted burnt malt. Quite like it. Very drinkable. Some faint fruit |
Old Bear - Black Maria | 4.20 | | Black beer with thin dark beige head. Tarry, burnt malt aroma. Deep bitter coffee and choc. More bitter choc in mouth. Doesn’t go into the powdery though. Nice finish mind. Its a dryish finish but still refreshing |
Brinkhoff - Dunkel | 5.10 | | Clear dark brown with beige head. Quite a nice dunkel. Got some nice toffee and cereal, but quite clean, almost tart on the fiish. Not as good as erdinger, quite a deep toffee though and tart. Tad over carbonated, which takes the roundness off it. Some sweet molasses |
Station House - Buzzin' | 4.30 | | Golden beer with disappearing white head. Aroma of honey. Fine in mouth, tad sweet, more honey. Finish is sweetish too. Not much hop to balance. I like the honey aroma though. |
Hydes - Dark Mild | 3.50 | | Black beer, touches of ruby, thickish dark beige head. Not a huge aroma. Some coffee. Fine in mouth, some grain. Finish has a bit of a juicy feel, some cherry. Just not enough flavour |
Wye Valley - Bitter | 3.70 | | Copper, thin off white head. Some citrus aromas. Bit watery in mouth. Some lemon/lime and hop on the end. Just a little indistinct that’s all. Not much of anything |
Station House - 4 A' That | 4.30 | | Copper colour with thin off white head. Aroma of caramel and hop. Creamy in mouth. Then attack of muddy earthy hops. Sharp citric finish but underlying caramel remains. Reminds me of a Camerons beer. Caramel is a bit over stated, but hop on end is nice |
Hydes - Free Spirit | 4.80 | | Clear copper coloour with disappearing white head. Very perfumed. Pear drops all over it. Bit sweet in the mouth which carries through. Fruit is quite entertaining. Drying hop kicks in on end. Perfumed element is a bit much too be honest |
Salopian - Lemon Dream | 4.50 | Not Tried
Archers - Swindon Strong Bitter | 5.00 | Not Tried
Old Bear - Hibernator | 5.00 | Not Tried
Salopian - Shropshire Gold | 3.80 | Not Tried

Went back in the evening to sample their continental beers. Superb
Erdinger - Dunkel | 5.00 | | Dark wheat beer with good malty fruit |
Westmalle - Dubbel | 7.00 | | Dark ruby. Gorgeous malty flavour hits you up front with hoppy finish. Great balance, excellent length |
Kuppers - Kolsch | 4.80 | | Looks like a golden lager but has a zesty citrusy bite at the end. Gorgeous refreshing. Acids really zing all over the tongue |
Früh - Kölsch | 4.80 | | Like the Kuppers, light gold in colour, very lemony citrus and refreshing |
Liefmans - Kriek | 6.50 | | Belgian sour beer with cherries to sweeten it up. Good mix, very acidic, but it is really good |
Paulaner - Original | 4.90 | | Very good continental lager |

One of the best pubs in the north west, if not the country. Central bar serving up to 9 british micros and a similar number of continental beers on draught, with a large range of european bottled beers
Rudgate - Ruby Mild | 4.40 | | Incredible flavours, ruby in colour, burnt caramel, lovely malty full flavour |
Ossett - Ellen's Glorry | 3.70 | | Pale gold citrusy session beer |
Durham - White Gold | 4.00 | | Pale gold, very hoppy, bitter, slight citrus |
Cottage - Broadgauge | 3.90 | | Light brown bitter, citrusy but with goodish malt to balance |
Abbeydale - Devotion | 4.40 | | Pale gold very much like the 2 beers above |

For someone who loves a variety of micro beers or continental beer, both draught and bottled, this is the best pub in Liverpool. Central bar has all the beers with a variety of drinking areas. Nips, halfs and full pints served quickly from friendly staff.
Oakham - JHB Extra | 4.20 | | Lovely hops and citrus fruit. Has typical Oakham taste |
